When do you guys think there will be no more desktops? Only laptops? Will it ever happen? Where is computer hardware going in the next 5 years in terms of size, shape, mobility, compactness? Will all os's be open in the future?

there will always be desktops. they will be cheaper and faster than laptops simply because they don't need to be crammed into a confined, mobile encasing. they may (and probably will) start to assume smaller profiles like the iMac G5 ("near" laptop form factors), but they won't go away.

they serve different functions and address different needs...

Soon, a computer will be connected to you at birth. About 5% will get Macs-based computers. They will never get sick. 94% will get a Windows-based computer. They will always be sick. The remainder will get another form of computer, but no body will be able to understand them.

:)

Oh, and lets not get into networking........

At some point there will be no need for a desktop. Yes things will get that small. There will no longer be any point in packaging a computer in a tower. The only reason we do so now is because it's cheaper for those who don't need portability. If your whole computer was the size of an iPod, would you still want a 3 cu. ft. enclosure to keep it in?

Remember, at one point people thought you'd never be able to put a computer on your desk, you'd need a whole room for it.

Of course there will still be a need for large computers, but what if VTech could fit their cluster in a desktop-sized box rather than a big lab?
