Questions raised after shock belt used at Texas murder trial

    From your story ...

    It looks like the judge's initial mistake was to let the defendant act as his own attorney.

    Rather than shock the defendant, the judge should have halted the proceedings, and appointed an attorney—which he ended up doing anyway.

    I can't say I'm much of a fan of the technique.

    I'm not sure. Perhaps Texas will have an opening for a new judge?

    It leads you to wonder how many trials have ended up with a wrongful conviction, because the alleged is essentially being tortured, in the courtroom.

    In the OP's article, it says that the belt is normally used when a defendant presents an immediate security risk. However, it would seem to me that if they pose that great of a risk, then it would probably be better to keep them locked up and to proceed without them being present in the court room.

    I don't think holding a trial without the alleged is in anyway ethical tbh.

    This concerns federal court proceedings ...

    So yes, as a rule the defendant must be present, except ...

    Its texas who needs legal? Just gets in the way of killing people.
