Quick jail breaking question. Do I have to restore

This is a question for my ipad Do I have to restore to factory settings before I run spirit or can I just run it with my iPad the way it is?

On the spiritjb site it says I need to restore if I am already running a tethered jailbreak which I am not but years of restoring iphones before jailbreak g has me nervous.
