I suspected system problem a couple of times because of Quicksilver, which I've been using for a couple of weeks, but maybe I caught it today. I came home from work to find the system unable to come back from a sleeping display, as if it was frozen with the screen dark, but the iMac still running. According to the system log the following was the last entry before the apparent freeze:

May 14 16:04:37 my-names Quicksilver[154]: An error ocurred while scanning "User Accounts": launch path not accessible

Does this mean anything to anyone? Thanks.

Well, to answer my own question, I may have unfairly defamed Quicksilver. It turns out one of my two 2GB RAM modules was in the process of going bad. Now that's it's been replaced all is well.
