Good man, Paul. As is Sen. Ron Wyden.

I thought he supported the reforms.

The neocons (and there are many Democrats among them) proposed a "reform" bill with very little reform and which also reauthorizes the entire Patriot Act. Rand Paul opposes this bill and wishes to scrap the PA entirely.

Good! The PA was another bill passed that no one read.

ANY expansion of the illegal federal behemoth MUST be opposed at all costs.

All these monstrosities intend to solve a problem, but they never do.

The Patriot Act is a crime against humanity. There is no "reforming" that.
Every poltician who supported or voted for it s not an acceptable presidential candidate.
The only 2 candidates who always opposed this abomination are Sanders and Paul.

Could something called the Patriot Act really be a bad idea?

Not really. When someone says patriot I think of the film The Patriot (first film I ever saw in the US) and Oliver North. Neither is really an overly positive association.

The honest, crass, and cynical truth about it was that it was called the Patriot Act to sell something that'd be otherwise unpalatable to a nation that was then reeling from 9/11, while we were all busy swinging our flags around in defiance.

I'm sure it was named that just for convenience. You have to admit, "Threatening Basic Civil Liberties Act" just doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.

And nevertheless people on here advocate the individuals responsible for it.

Obama is a huge proponent of the National Security State. After all, he happily signed the PA II into law, neocon that he is.

I generally disagree with Rand Paul, but this was fantastic, and I commend him for it.

I'm surrounded by liberals in the SF Bay Area and I can't tell you how many times people have told me that they commend Rand Paul for his stands on privacy and the drug war and the Federal Reserve and the endless wars and the on and on. But when I ask them who are they going to vote for, they say Hillary.
