We are now at the end of Obama's term and it's time to once again rank the presidents of your lifetime.

From best to worst here is how I rank the presidents since I was born.

    1. Ronald Reagan (Best)
    2. Richard Nixon
    3. Jimmy Carter
    4. Barack Obama
    5. George HW Bush
    6. Bill Clinton
    7. Gerald Ford
    8. George W. Bush (Worst)

Note: Trump has not been inaugurated and is ineligible until the next election

I don't know a lot about American history but as far as I know, I could rate those I am a bit familiar:
    4>2>6.

This rank is based on US-China relationship and its development.

Is this from the time you were born or from when you were old enough to know the presidents ? I think the better question would be ranking the presidents since the time you were able to vote (even if you didn't vote).

Presidents before I was old enough to recognize them (no particular order)
    Dwight Eisenhower
    John Kennedy
    Lyndon Johnson

Presidents I recognized before I could vote
    Richard Nixon
    Gerald Ford

    Presidents after I could vote
    Ronald Reagan
    George H.W. Bush
    Bill Clinton
    George W. Bush
    Barack Obama
    Jimmy Carter

Not exactly, but I could live with the list in @colourfastt post (#3). Some of the choices in this thread defy logic or illustrate a political preference more than a neutral accomplishment assessment.

    For example:
    • Nixon was a crook. Besides Watergate, there was a rumor that he secretly sabotaged the Paris peace talks to help get himself elected. (A link) He was one of the reasons I became an independent.
    • Reagan a so called fiscally conservative Republican, started the country down the road of the first significant post WW2 debt, by cutting taxes, but not spending.
    • Carter here is an interesting article: JIMMY CARTER WAS A BETTER PRESIDENT THAN YOU THINK
    • HW Bush An outstanding Republican compared to today's crop of mentally challenged hypocrites. He saw a reason taxes should be raised: to cut the ballooning Reagan deficit. If there were only some pragmatic Republicans around today. George H.W. Bush honored for courage with 1990 tax hikes
    • Kennedy overrode his generals to resolve a nuclear confrontation which easily could have mushroomed.
    • Johnson oversaw Federal efforts to assist the Civil Rights Movement, but was mired in the Vietnam War.
    • Ford mostly a placeholder President, not a bad guy other than he pardoned the crook.
    • Clinton last President to preside over general prosperity.
    • It was too much for the GOP to have a Democrat eat their lunch so they got their revenge with Bubba. Note his Democrat replacement (Obama) despite their unparalleled efforts to thwart him, turned the economy around, but insisting on taking the country down, looks like the stupid have prevailed again with Trump, that is until he implodes or explodes us for a variety of plausible reasons.

    Presidential candidates I voted for:

    Ronald Reagan
    George H.W. Bush
    Bill Clinton
    Bob Dole
    George W. Bush
    Barack Obama
    Gary Johnson

I don't know how to rank them. Based on what? IMO the greatest single achievement would be Ronald Reagan negotiating away an entire class of nuclear weapons.

Like most things in life, it's all relative.

I would be nervous if everyone agreed with me :D.

    Good synopsis.

W Bush was bad in a sense he had power hungry advisors (cough Chaney cough) who tricked him to make bad decisions (cough Iraq cough). I think he would be a OK President otherwise.

HW Bush was far better, but dogged by Reagan legacy.

Reagan could be seen as one of the worst presidents for is massive deficit spending, Iran-Contra, reversing the standardization to Metric, Beirut, and many others.
There is even a rumor Reagan cause the Challenger disaster demanding a launch when NASA was saying they could not. This was because State of Union was the next day and he wanted to harp about teacher in space.

Clinton was good. He made some really dumb mistakes, but in end improved the US.

Obama is a wonderful president in terms of connecting with the people, improving overall lives. He sucked in taking on international bad guys, too timid. Also too cautious taking on banks. He did the US good, but the the rapid decline of wage equality is the ghost that will haunt him.

All that darn economic growth under Reagan just stunk ;)

On Reagan. Much of his debt came from having to rebuild a military that Carter devastated, so much of that was on Carter.

    FD Roosevelt (best)
    Johnson
    Eisenhower
    Obama
    GHW Bush
    Carter
    Kennedy
    Truman
    Clinton
    Ford
    Nixon
    Reagan
GW Bush (worst so far but Trump looks like a slam-dunk contender for this slot)

These are in my lifetime... I only vaguely remember FDR, much more about Truman, was a complete political junkie thanks to my elders by time Eisenhower was sworn in.

GHW Bush (Competent, sane, intelligent, educated leader of the GOP – I am nostalgic)
Clinton (except for certain character flaws *cough*)
Nixon (yes, Nixon, who opened relations with PRC)
Obama (limited by GOP tantrums in Congress; a little long on rhetoric but a little short on action)
Reagan (likeable and well meaning, mostly, but started us down a disastrous economic path)
    Carter (Who?)
    Ford (Who?)
    Johnson (Machiavelli would be proud)
    Dubya (Machiavelli would be ashamed)
    *Trump

*Just a prediction. I hope I am wrong.

    W Bush

I think it is far too early to rank Obama. A lot of it will depend on how effective he ends up having been in securing his legacy. If he succeeded in that then he will likely be at or near the top. If his legacy falls apart then he will go down as a positive but mostly useless historical footnote who set the stage for us to get Trump who looks like he will be a shoe in for the bottom spot.

Short sighted economic growth based on increasing inequality, raking up debt and –as you say– military spending... yeah awesome.

Wasn't born in 'Merica, but this is how I rank 'em after I got here.

Bubba (lowered deficit, didn't outright bomb people)
Nixon (Opened up China, end a war)
Pappa Bush (Fought a justifiably war, got rid of teapot dictators with minimal bruhaha)
The Peanut Farmer (smart man, but tried to do too much)
Ford (Didn't anything too bad, best remember for falling down:p)
Ray-Gun (dismantled the FDR's New Deal:mad:, took national debt to new heights)
Barry (Extrajudicial execution of US citizens, Warmonger)
    Junior Bush (Warmonger, Idiot:rolleyes:)

Yeah, I'm anti-war; comes from growing up in a war zone.

    Rebuild, and then some.

    Several new aircraft programs (10 I think, including C-17, B-1, F-117, A-12 (canceled), T-45, new heilos, more)
    Several platform upgrades
    Several new missile programs
    New ground vehicles
    "Star Wars"
    4 battleships recommissioned (very expensive)
    Increase total man power
Even Shuttle launch facility in Vandenburg for military sats that was never used (IIRC)

One reason the deficit was in 100's of billions.

But yeah, Reagan did cause collapse of USSR by forcing them to break their bank, almost doing the same for USA.
    (IRONICALLY proving Keynesian economics)

Nice list, but don't see how Barry as warmongerer. Granted he continued but at reduced rate and did so remotely so got nearly all of our troops out.
