Well, this surely will dampen any chances of a Reagan reelection.
And I don't think Nixon will get the nomination anytime soon.
Yikes, big oof. Not a good look, chief. You should get in a time machine back to 1971 and tell him the error of his ways. While you're at it, travel a few hundreds years back even prior and tell people they're obviously morons for not sterilizing their environment before performing surgeries.
...because progress and advancement can't happen without something to have progressed from.
It would appear to me racist that Reagan was Trump has managed to outdo him in public, can you imagine what his private conversations must be like?
In this case it is regression not progress.
That's just how everyone felt back then. Glad there's no more racism
Why is this being released now?
AOC gets to look back...
Who honestly gives a ****?
Evidently people who've thought Nixon & Reagan were racist.
People that got called out for daring to say supposed St. Reagan was racist, and Nixon.
Oh, and anyone that they might have actually been racist too.
They're dead and this notion that people (even minorities) don't say things behind closed doors that'd they'd never say in public is idiotic.
It's always people that shout "Who cares!" or "That was years ago!" that were often the same ones shedding crocodile tears because Saint Ray-Gun was labelled a racist. In other news, water is wet. He's another in a long line of racist pieces of **** burning in hell.
It's an interesting thing to see, that for some, evidence of racism by high ranking public figures who made policy that affected the entire country, now means nothing. When people in the past ( or as AOC points out, in the present ), said such persons were racist, it was a "bite your tongue" moment. Or as we see it today "the racism word is too often used".
If you are on the crap end of the racism stick, you will always care, you don't have a choice.
To have it confirmed that major political figures deified ( often by those who won't experience that particular brand of racism ), it's an unpleasant reminder of the real truth.
Just because one keeps their racist crap behind closed doors, it doesn't make them any less racist, or willing to do racist crap when the doors are wide open.
From the Atlantic:
Basically, the National Archives withheld that section of Nixon's tapes until this year.
And, the author makes a good point beyond the idea that Reagan was quietly racist.
The author notes that Nixon's racism was paternalistic, he believed in racial hierarchy, and as the author notes, "he had convinced himself that it wasn’t racist to think black people, as a group, were inferior to whites, so long as he held them in paternalistic regard."
Won't matter. People will defend him still and say it doesn't matter, or who cares. Why? Because its likely some of them hold similar racist and bigotry views. It is an uncomfortable position to be in to have to realize you may be a piece of ****. So often, they must hold apposing viewpoints in their minds.
The dismissive attitude is purely in order to not have to think about it and pretend they don't have to face reality.
There's no need to dwell on this new information. But it's new information. And it should be heard, Digest,d and then learned from.
Reagan was a jackass, and Nixon was a jackass, even when accounting for the difference in times between now and then. The tape is more an example than a confirmation in this regard.
I always knew he was our racist uncle. To the usual suspects it doesn’t matter probably because they’ve been surrounded by people like this their entire lives. To them, this is normal.
At least Reagan tried to keep it on the down-low, which is a step up from our current affliction.
