The 3G to 3GS was only a minor boost in speed -- the 4 to 4S was a more significant boost.

While technically that might be true, in practice you felt the speed increase more. The 3G felt like it lagged with pretty much everything you did and the 3GS eliminated the perceived lag everywhere. The 4 never felt like it lagged so the 4S didn't have the perceived speed increase like the 3GS did. Not to mention the 3GS had triple the usable RAM.

What are Apple's selling features?

  • All new aluminium design
  • New 4" retina display
  • A6 chip
  • Fast connectivity
  • Better Battery life
  • New better sounding earphones
  • Enhanced video
  • Panoramic photos
  • Smarter Siri
  • Icloud
  • Seamless integration with other Apple Products
  • New connector
  • Redesigned maps apps with turn by turn

Although those features are available from android phones, these are new to the iPhone.

I remember, I owned a 3G 4 years ago (I think it was 4 at least). The next year, my sisters 3GS put my 3G to shame when loading apps, safari pages etc. A much greater difference than the 4-> 4S.

Check this out to see a video comparison. Now go look it at a 4 vs 4S. Now which upgrade do you think had the greatest effect on speed?
The 3G, of course, but that's only because it was so slow. The iPhone 4 was a capable smartphone but it was much faster. However the 4S shines when doing anything more than flicking through the home screen. You might be playing a game, browsing the web, etc.

That's right. Triple? I know it had double the RAM.

You seem to finally be agreeing with me. The 3G was slow, and the 3GS made an incredible difference. Without a doubt the 4S is faster than the 4, but you notice it significantly less relative to the 3GS upgrade. Hence why I said the spec bump wasn't a defining part of the update. It was for the 3GS, not so much for the 4S.

There won't be a huge jump like that anymore. Every smart phone now a days is very fast. Only little improvements from here on out.

Exactly. That's why I called it a minor spec bump (referring to the 4 -> 4s). The specs will improve but we'll get diminishing returns every year. Which leads me back to that Siri was the standout upgrade of the 4s.

I agree that the 3GS made a very noticeable difference, but with the 4S the difference is noticeable not so much with the home screen, or UI, but when using apps -- faster load times, faster browsing, better graphics, etc.

Hands on reports for the iPhone 5 say it's noticeably faster too. It looked that way to me, even flicking through the Settings app.

Go back and look at that video I posted. It showed exactly that with the 3GS over the 3G. App load times, browsing etc. Again you're comparing a change of 30 -> 20 seconds to one thats 10 -> 9 seconds when comparing these upgrades.

The 4S is faster than the 4, obviously. But the upgrade was much less effective than the 3GS upgrade.

The 5 will be the same way. It'll take 9 -> 8. Sure it'll be snappier, but thats it really. You're going to get less and less of a upgrade speed-wise every year. Technology isn't a linear progression.

am i the only one who doesn't like the awkward screen size? instead of being a selling point, it's a con for me.

i do like the new features esp the a6 chip. the screen size is just meh.

I had a look at it after I posted, but like I said before the improvement with the 4S and 5 will be most noticeably when running apps -- they will open faster (according to Apple one app opened 2x faster on the 5) and intensive apps like iPhoto shouldn't be laggy at all.

More like 5 > 3 or 2.5.

It's not really awkward. The 5 is only 9mm taller than the 4S, the screen is about half an inch taller or so, roughly.
