How does one go about tweaking the superdrive software to get a region free player? iMac PPC G4 17" flat panel.

Not sure if you cando that...I thought the region functionality was built into the hardware (i.e. the DVD drive)?

Why not just rip and re-burn the disc as a region free DVD? That way you don't have to worry about "tweaking" software.

Make sure you read all the instructions first, this region DVD stuff can cause a lot of problems with your drive. It hasn't been a problem with mine, but it's possible it can turn it into a paper weight, and void the warranty.

You can but you have to flash the firmware (bad idea). There is also firmware available that will bump the 1x SuperDrives to 2x and double their CD burn speeds (8x to 16x). It voids your warranty and is unsupported firmware, which is why it's a bad idea.

I would use DVDBackup to remove the region from the DVD.

the problem is that you have to be able to read the DVD in your drive, so that means you've got to change the region straight up. or is that only with MacTheRipper? i've been using that... and you've got to let DVD Player open and play the DVD first, then you can rip the DVD. anyone use another app that lets your rip the DVD without opening it in DVD Player?

anyway, i think you can only change the drive region 5 times, i've already changed mine twice (and once for a DVD that was region 2 and 4. it pays to read the case.)

so i don't think you can get a region free SuperDrive, however you can use different software to play the DVD. VLC is very good... you can stick and region DVD in your drive (i'm pretty sure) and it will open it as a DVD, with full menus and everything. what a great app. :)
