Removing HD icon?

I am trying to remove my HD icon from my desktop, but would like to not delete all of my files by doing so. I remember hearing about a way to do this, If anyone knows please respond.

In Finder, click on the Finder menu and select "Preferences…". Then click on the "General" tab and uncheck the "Hard disks" checkbox under where it says "Show these items on the Desktop:".
