Searched, but only found an old thread that didn't really answer this question...

The hubs has a 3GS with minor cracking around the headphone jack. The phone is way out of warranty. In your vast experience, if he takes it to Apple for repair, will they say "sucks to be you," or will they offer to "repair" (i.e. replace) for a certain amount? Please note I am NOT trying to get a free phone here, I'm just wondering if it's worth the trouble (will be selling the phone when he replaces it with an iPhone 5, and if the added value of the shiny new back is more than the cost to get it, that would make me happy).

Most likely you'll get an out of warranty replacement, which costs $199. Depends on the genius or Apple store you take it to, and sometimes even which day you bring it in, but Sometimes they're extremely accommodating and replace it for free.

If your close to an Apple store, and they're not busy, drop in and ask. Worst they say is that you need to pay the 199.
