LMAO

I can picture the commercials now. Rather like the ads for some patriotic commemorative coin with "My Country Tis of Thee" played throughout.

Am I supposed to be interested in a product because of the military industrial complex? Give me a break.

Yes. If you work for them or in mission-critical jobs relating to medical, industrial, aeronautics and so on. They don't use 'toy-like' OSes like Apple's for these kind of critical jobs.

You probably don't get it but the tech RIM has acquired is significant. So go ahead, make love with your iPad under the blanket or in the bathtub. That's what it's good for.

That link is old news. I knew about this a long time ago. I knew about the story of American soldiers using iPod Touches to share information with iraqi locals and show photos of wanted terrorists to communicate better with them. But what Apple has is NOT the main eco-system the military uses exclusively nor primarily.

What they use is far more advanced than what Apple has.

Well, I hope the military doesn't use all off-the-shelf stuff, for that matter. But quit moving the target. The OS is not "a toy" that the military avoids. It's respected in the military, it's used in the military.

It supports 1080p video but can't even play 720p at full resolution -- only good for outputting it.
You know it mentions absolutely nothing about battery life whatsoever, anywhere (unless I missed it), that's a little worrying.

The iPhone 4 and iPad both support 720p video, but neither can display it or even output it at full resolution....

Boy is it going to be a long 3-6 months for you. :p

A lot of people showing they have no clue about corporate culture yet try to talk authoritatively about it :

play·book
   /ˈpleɪˌbʊk/ Show Spelled[pley-book] –noun
Informal . any plan or set of strategies, as for outlining a campaign in business or politics.

The name is very corporate.

A fact that repeatedly gets said in this thread even as people point out issues with the name. So I think people do know corporate culture. After all, we're mostly in it.

Most people seeing issues is with "play". Yet again, Playbook is a word used in corporate culture.

If you have another issue, cite it. Otherwise, it just shows your disconnect from corporate reality. Which is not a bad thing, just something you lack personal experience on.

Heck, in programming in french, we have a term which is "jeu d'essaie" meaning essentially "tests". "Jeu" is the french word for game. Yet the word is used in an IT setting without any issue. People saying "play" is an issue are making things up, lacking any other negative things to say about Apple's competition.

It used, but not very well respected. Lack of support by 3rd parties is key in that. Just like PS3's are used, but it doesnt mean thats the only way to do things. Governement deal with contracts and they must give other manufactur chances to compete for a specific need of the military. If mac osx was chosen, it was a very specific reason. But not for mass depolyment or use with in the military.

I have said it once in this thread and I will say it again

Corporation Long/short term Strategic Goals = Playbook

Other issues ARE being cited! C'mon, get with the thread. The "play" problem is minor compared to the other issues. Wall street got the point.

... As the second major tablet to become widely available to the public, it's either going to prove or disprove Apple's position that Flash is unsuitable for mobile devices...

I agree with your skepticism on the other points, but in what sense is this "the second major tablet to become widely available to the public"? It's vaporware, and will be for at least another 6 months.

Two things that stand out for me:

1) Availability in 2011 suggests that this won't be up against the current iPad but its replacement. Interesting that they'd announce this so far in advance and I can't help but wonder if RIM would have been better off keeping quiet until a little closer to the time...

True. RIM's announcement is designed as an Apple iPad2 spoiler for the enterprise audience. And some tech managers will be fighting that corner on their behalf. But the smart money will go with what has already got a track record, not untried vaporware from the company that comprehensively failed to get the touch screen solution until after everyone else!

So what other issues with the name that are more important than Play ? I have seen none other than "play". The name was strictly what I was talking about if you didn't catch it.

Wall Street got it ? Everyone was down today. Next you'll be telling us the rumor of Tim Cook leaving for HP is what made the AAPL stock go down. That was debunked in that thread.

I agree with your skepticism on the other points, but in what sense is this "the second major tablet to become widely available to the public"? It's vaporware, and will be for at least another 6 months.

Not to mention which one was the first ? Surely not the iPad... And if you really want the iPad to be first, ignoring all other products that came before it (like the Nokia n800 or the Archos Android tablets like the Archos 5), then the Galaxy Tab would technically be the second.

Great name. Playbook is actually a really smart name. Kudos to RIM for that...

Indeed, I think the smartest part about this product is its name. Do you know why?

It's a macho, US sport related, male centric name that's hoping to be all inclusive, but the word's other meaning trivialises the thing as a toy, a games machine perhaps.

So that's less than half a win. The era of macho nomenclature is as over as go-faster stripes and chrome trim.

Today, prestige, cachet and kudos are no longer represented by largely gender exclusive themes such as: big shot, bigwig, big gun or even expert or new. We live in an inclusive world of: celebrity, star, VIP, leading light, ergonomic and trust.

The idea was obviously to appeal to the male end of the enterprise, and that's definitely so last century. Whenever I see a white haired fat man in a suit reading from an autocue trying to sell anything in the 21st century, I know that company is dying.

You mean the other meaning that says :

Informal . any plan or set of strategies, as for outlining a campaign in business or politics.

Or did you mean that other meaning :

(in Elizabethan drama) the script of a play, used by the actors as an acting text.

No, that can't be it either... wait, this last one :

a book containing the scripts of one or more plays.

Nope. None of the meanings are even close to related to toys or gaming... Oh well. Maybe you meant in some other culture. Let's see what the World dictionary says :

World English Dictionary
playbook (ˈpleɪˌbʊk) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]

— n
1. a book containing a range of possible set plays
2. a notional range of possible tactics in any sphere of activity

No toys or gaming there. Hey look at that 2nd meaning! Wow, you'd think that could fit in a business/corporate setting...

Can we stop this "play" nonsense once and for all ? It's a non-argument. It's debunked, it never was anywhere close to right, nor is it an issue at all. Anyone who knows English knows a playbook is a book of tactics/strategies or something you'd have in a theater.

RIMM is -3% as I write this.

NASDAQ is -0.03%

That's the reaction I was talking about. Not everything is down, and nothing as badly as 3%.

The other problems with the book that you play with I've cited is that it's not close to being released. Sometime next year it will supposedly be out, to compete with iPad 2.0 by then or shortly thereafter. They are pointing at a target that is moving, and that's going to be an issue.

And it is a problem that any app for it has to be either Flash or HTML 5 and nothing else. So much for that app store.

A lot of people showing they have no clue about corporate culture yet try to talk authoritatively about it :

The name is very corporate.

No, it's very US corporate. Anywhere else it's suggestive of a toy, a sex toy even, or maybe a games player. The idea was obviously to appeal to the male end of the enterprise, and that's definitely so last century. But that's the extent of it's win in pure name terms.

AAPL is -3.56%, Google -5.34, Netflix -4.22

I think you're seriously looking way too much into this drop by RIM.

Sorry, I'm not in the US and to me it doesn't sound like a toy, a sex toy even or maybe a games player. It sounds like a book containing strategies or like something you'd find in a theater.

AAPL is -1.30%, not -3.56%
GOOG is -1.08%, not -5.34%
NFLX is -2.42%, not -4.22%

You are entitled to your own opinions, but you cannot make up facts and get away with it.

RIM is -2.95%, the worst of the lot

It's the comparison to their competition, not the absolute amount of the drop, that makes me think Wall Street was not impressed. They surprised with a big announcement, and the stock tanked more than the rest.

Codswollop. I've never seen any of those devices you mention - anywhere, in store or in use in the wild. I have seen hundreds of iPads in store and loads in use by individuals and deployed in the enterprise.

Samsung have sold how many? You don't prove anything by launching a product, you do so by selling it. You prove everything by selling record numbers.

what you proved is everyone is down.
But a another counter question is Apple almost always has a fairly large drop after an announcement even when everyone else is going up.

Guess that means all Apple products are dead on arrival and suck....

Really bad argument choice there.

You're right, I was looking points, not percentages. Still not a very convincing argument.

Again, goal posts moving. Lots of that going on this forum. He said "First major tablet", not "First major tablet with X sales" or "First major tablet to be sold at Y Retailer".

Samsung are launching in October ahead of RIM's playbook. As such, they will be on market first. Maybe we can wait for the launch to get the sales number hum ?

(And btw, the Nokia n800 was very popular in Europe, not in the States).

Can I get a commemorative coin with it?
