Long story short, upgraded to ios5 and apps didn't work. Then tried to restore, but instead of restoring from backup, I restored as new phone, is there any way to go back and restore from an old backup? PLEASE tell me there is, I lost EVERYTHING! I know it's MY fault.

as long as you have a backup on your computer just connect it to your computer and restore as backup.

When you connect the phone to your computer - and it's icon shows up on the iTunes sidebar - control / click on the icon and you should see a drop down menu with the option to restore.

That's the thing the drop down doesn't show up and allow me to restore from a backup. I don't have the option to do that, that's why I'm worried I lost everything.

Have you checked on iTunes (Edit -> Preferences -> Devices) to see if anything's listed under your Device Backups?

If you backed up to your PC you can restore from the previous image...better yet, if you have been backing up to iCloud you can also use that restore.

Firstly, go into iTunes>>Edit>>Prefrences>>devices and check to see if you have your older back up there....

So I was able to back up from a back up BUT my apps and photos are still missing, I don't care so much about the apps but of course the photos are priceless and I can't figure out what happened there.

Your photos, if they were held in the photo roll, are still part of the backup. If they were synced, they should exist somewhere else, like wherever you synced them from.

Sounds like you may need to restore to an older backup as well.

    easy fix..

put in DFU mode, restore, set up as new phone, THEN plug in to iTunes and restore from back up. BUT always set up as new iPhone.

Since you said you have Device Backups listed under your Preferences, if you've set up as a new phone, you can simply do this:

    1. Connect your iPhone to your iTunes
    2. Your iPhone's name pops up on the left column
    3. Right-Click on your iPhone's name
    4. Select "Restore from Backup

(I hope after you've setup your iPhone as a new phone, you didn't change the iPhone's name to be the same name as before and backed up it. Because if you did, that means you really have lost the old backup)

After you restore from back up. The phone may look like its has nothing.
But if you see the sync icon at top (the 2 arrow in a circle), its mean the iPhone is still restoring from your back up.
iOS5 change the way to restore the backup. It looks like syncing wirelessly...

iOS 5 now allows you to still use your phone while you sync or backup.

    no more "slide to cancel"

I would recommend restoring from backup...just plug in your iPhone to iTunes, right click on your devices name (left side of iTunes) and select restore from backup...choose which one first...or delete all other back ups that are stored there except for the one you know holds your pictures.

Now once your iPhone is all finished backing up...unplug from iTunes, check your photo app to make sure the photos are in there and reconnect to your computer...if you're like me and use Windows there should be some sort of menu that pops up asking you if you'd like to transfer the photos on your camera roll over to your PC....Select yes and do so....find where Windows has stored your photos and make a new folder...call it "synced pics" and place it on your desktop (for now)

Restore a fresh iPhone (not from backup this time around) and once it's complete you can then sync those pictures to your newly restored, fresh iPhone.

Always put your photos on camera roll into iPhoto. Then you just have to sync them back if your iTunes backup goes kaput. When I installed iOS 5 I removed all my photos, music and videos from the phone before I started both to speed up the restore process and lessen the risk of losing everything. It worked like a charm.
