I'm taking my mid-2015 15" MBP in to be fixed today. I've been procrastinating because I absolutely need this machine, but I have to because my extended warranty expires in 3 weeks. Apple told me it might take upto a week because there's so much stuff wrong with it:
  1. The display needs to be replaced. The LCD has cracked (from heat?). The glass is fine, but the LCD has a crack going all around the screen
  2. Battery is toast
  3. Escape key no longer works (I blame coffee)
  4. Speakers are broken (again coffee)
  5. Thermal throttling is constant and unrelenting even in basic tasks.
So the $100 deductible is going to be well worth it.

I'm going to pickup a mid-2018 15" MBP for the interim. If I really like it, I will just keep it and sell the 2015 when I get it back. If I don't, I'll return it. But I thought some people might benefit from a comparison review given that the 2015 model is the last non-touchbar non-USB-c model.

Never hurts I suppose..

I know I've already done my calculus on it all, but there's always an audience for a fresh look at previous vs current gen and pros/cons

Edit: As I was composing this, I did some video editing in FCPX. Since then, my Mac has been throttled to hell. I closed out FCPX, it’s under 60C, why am I stuck at 800Mhz!?

So I’ve been using this for a little over a day now and wanted to give my initial impressions. I think I’m leaning towards keeping this, even despite the annoyances I’ll mention below. Because at the end of the day, all I really care about is performance and this performs spectacularly.

I picked up the mid-2018 15” MBP with an 8th generation 2.2Ghz I7 processor (Coffee Lake), 256GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM. I am exchanging this tomorrow when the refurb I ordered arrives. I ordered a mid-2018 15” refurb MBP through Apple with an 8th generation 2.6Ghz i7 processor (Coffee Lake), 512GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM. And the 560X.

First off, let me mention my old computer, a 2015 15” MBP with a 4th generation 2.2Ghz i7 (Haswell), 512GB SSD, and 16GB of RAM. It’s a great machine. But I just find that it chokes with multitasking. Like if I have Final Cut up, everything else is slowed to a crawl.

This computer is more than 50% more powerful than my 2015, which is no slouch either. The extra 2 cores make multitasking much quicker. It’s weird, I thought my bottleneck was RAM, even though my RAM usage rarely went above 70% of 16GB. I never once considered that the CPU was my bottleneck because it’s an extremely powerful CPU with 4 cores, that would be ridiculous. But it’s true.

USB-c. I don’t mind it as much as I thought I would. I think having a USB-C to USB-A dongle alway attached to my computer will solve what I jokingly call the “slutty computer problem.” How after a while, your USB ports don’t grip as well as they used to so even bumping your machine could cause a disconnect. Not fun while transferring data!

I will say that I am going to see if I can get one of those magnetic USB-c adapters because the lack of a magnetic Magsafe connector worries me. I am ALWAYS tripping over the AC adapter.

The touch bar. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it would be entirely useless. It’s alright but I just find myself asking why? Apple didn’t need to reinvent the wheel. My big issue with it is that I keep accidentally hitting Touch Bar buttons while typing. Anyone know if there are any 3rd party tools to disable the Touch Bar while typing? Or even a script. The basic logic being

if (key.pressed_In_Last_250ms) //250ms is an example, could be anything.
{ touchBar.disable();}
else
{touchBar.enable();}

I ended up “disabling” the touch bar so that it only displays the old keys. And I swapped out Siri for Spotlight because Siri has been neglected since 2011 and I think she might have dementia.

The butterfly keys. This is the 3rd gen, right? I actually don’t hate it. I tried the butterfly keyboard in the apple store for the 1st and 2nd gens and hated them. It reminded me almost of those Surface keyboards that are entirely electronic. There was very little give to the keys when pressed. This keyboard is better. I still prefer the old keyboard (from 2008-2015), but this isn’t that bad.

Touch ID. I actually did not even realize it had Touch ID until after I had bought the MacBook Pro. It works well, on par with the last/current gens prior to getting rid of it for Face ID. I can’t help but feel like this is a lame duck model prior to getting Face ID. Because while I’m sure the current models could support Face ID, you KNOW they will make it a new model exclusive.

So the throttling thing was my bad I think. Just really put too much stress on it.

I ran a TON of geekbench tests with various configurations. You can see the results here. Check the notes for the configuration.

Then ignore the thread...

The thread title specifically asks if "anyone would be interested..."
Is it ok if the user you quoted responds to that?

In his case - his feedback is "Don't really care"
Nothing wrong with that - the OP literally asked for that type of feedback.

This should be very helpful to many as people are constantly recommending the 2015 over the 2018 models.

Then ignore the thread...
In fairness you don’t see the 2015 recommended to people who need a lot of power. Those people pretty well only have the latest machines as a choice anyway. Where the 2015 is still recommended is for people with more modest power requirements, looking to save a bit of money and not risk experiencing one of the numerous issues the touchbar machines exhibit.

Don't really care....
I've changed the title since I've already started writing and testing everything.

For future people reading this and wondering what the title originally was, it was:
Would anyone be interested in a mid 2015 vs mid 2018 comparison review?

I just got the 2.6Ghz refurb in the mail. Will run some tests now. The only notable difference between the 2.2 and 2.6 besides the processor is that the 2.6 has the 560X.

Hi! I upgraded from a mid-2015 to a 2018 2.6 15". I also wanted to post a detailed comparison, and a general review about the 2018. I'm overall very happy so far. Under full load, it's stable around 3.1Ghz which is acceptable for me.

EDIT: I'll probably post the review-comparison next weekend

You're the guy whose 2015 had a literal coating of finger grease covering the entire screen, right?

And with the admission of spilling coffee on it, and thermal throttling almost certainly resulting from the machine's internals being plugged with dust which is easily cleanable, any comparison seems pointless because it's clear you don't really take care of your machine. But anyway, regardless, of course the 2018 will be faster no matter what.

Not sure why your 2015 was throttling so much. Maybe the thermal paste had dried up or the system was filled with dust. Possibly a battery issue.
Running geekbench on my 15” 2015 2.8ghz mbp (upgraded cpu model) I got about 16,300 or so multi score. On my other 15” 2015 2.5ghz mbp, I get in the mid 15,000 range on multi (15,500 or so). I don’t think the 300 mhz difference on your model would account for the difference in the scores you have.

My previous 15” 2017 2.9ghz mbp (512GB/AMD 560 model) scored about 15,800 or so.

The 6 core 2018s are powerful, but not twice as much as the slightly older 4 core ones.

For reference, my 2018 6 core i7 mac mini scores over 26,000 multi.
