Hi Macrumors. This is my first review so bare with me^^
I thought I would share some thoughts about this product. Usally I let other people do stuff like this but it seems this product is not very popular yet.
Product: I-ODD Portable Virutal Rom
Website: http://i-odd.com/
So lets start:
This is pretty much an external haddrive case, but it has a very cool feature, you can mount ISOs on it, no need to burn any dvd, cd, or bd rom.
The first thing you have to do is buy a harddrive 2,5", I got one at my local store that was in an external harddrive and just took it out of there (500gb)
It took me around 15 minutes to get it in, the book that came with the i-odd was not very good and had little info on how to use these things. I slipped once and cut my finger open^^.
After I finally got it closed I plugged it in to my Windows Computer and upgraded the Firmware which has Mac support.
After that I started dropping ISO files on it, to my suprise I could not select them on the OLED on the i-odd, which I quickly found out why, you have to put a folder on the root called _iso
I tested 10 different ISO ranging from Windows 7 to Clonezilla Live CD, all except 1 ISO did't work, that being the Trinity-Rescue-Kit (ver. 3.3). I installed my Office 2007 on my windows machine with it. I also tried a live cd on my macbook, it booted from it without any problems and was much faster then using normal DVD/CD
The Menu is very simple and you can scroll through ISOs fast, to select one you have to press the scroll button in, they could have made the button a bit better since it is very hard to click in.
Using it as a normal external harddrive was no problem and very fast, my standard speed was 29mb/s.
I recommend this to anybody who deals with a lot of ISOs and doesnt want to burn them. I work as an IT Tech and it helps my daily job a lot, it should be a standard tool.
