t took more than seven years, but a proposal by two Palo Alto officers to restrict sale of certain cough medicines to minors will finally become California law next week.

Senate Bill 514, which was authored by Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, and pitched by two officers as part of Simitian's "There Oughta be a Law" contest in 2004, will take effect Jan. 1. The bill will make California the first state in the nation to ban the sale of medicine containing dextromethorphan (DXM) to minors.

Sgt. Wayne Benitez and former Palo Alto officer Ron Lawrence first proposed restricting medicine with DXM in 2004. At the time, few in the Legislature had heard of DXM or the "robotripping" effect it produces. That year, the proposal fizzled in the Legislature.

Since then, abuse of this chemical has skyrocketed. According to a report from the California Poison Control System, DXM abuse for children younger than 17 went up by 850 over the past decade.

Simitian revived the bill again this year and it passed overwhelmingly. The passage means that starting on Jan. 1, store clerks will have to check customers' IDs to make sure they are 18 or older before they can purchase cough and cold medicines containing DXM.

Yet another pointless law. Which will also require more money to enforce in a state that is already heavily in debt.

Am I the only one who misread it as ROBOT tripping?

Actually this has happened to me by mistake. I took two gulps of a cough syrup instead of the recommended dose and I was out of my head for at least an hour. I can't imagine what it would be like to take an entire bottle. This isn't new however, instead of calling it robotripping they just called it 'tussin.

I thought it was that until you pointed it out.

I haven't heard of any of these.

That state allowed selling DXM cough syrup directly to minors!?

    Really?

I'm 100% against drug prohibition but that's just plain stupid, you don't sell psychoactive substances to kids.

I remember the good old days when cough syrup had codeine in it.

I'm kinda for this. I had a friend who decided to drink a lot of codeine syrup one day . He rode his harley on the wrong side of the freeway and slammed into a semi doing 60.

I don't think if you are under 18 here you can buy them either. I know they swipe your ID and limit how much you can buy, since it's also used in Meth. Or am I thinking of something different.

I hear ya. I remember when you used to be able to get that over the counter.

Frankly, I'm not upset about the law, I'm upset with idiots who keep searching for the "next big thing" to get high on.

Cough syrup is nasty, who would willingly drink it. My mother had to force it down my throat.

I did that and spent the next 4 hours riding a toilet.

It seems for me nyquil is an explosive laxative  , so add intense gastric distress to a nasty cold and you have a s***** weekend.

Ridiculous. I eat hemp seeds (no THC of course) as part of my diet for recovering from my broken foot. Hemp is actually really good for you- lots of protein and vitamins. I will continue to eat it even after I'm better. It's a good fiber substitute for wheat, which is really not that great for you, due to the fact that it breaks down into sugar. Wheat has been banned from my diet.

Sad thing is- hemp has to be imported because of our idiotic drug laws.

This is just one more stupid move. People are going to abuse substances, no matter what they are. Hell, people abuse food. Shall we ban that too?

I'm tired of this kind of crap.

At first I thought it said robostripping.

Which is an interesting word, but I wonder what how that would work. :p

Did no one else see "Robotipping", or is it just me.

Now that cow tipping seems to have become a lost art. :(

So many of us fail to show due appreciation to the cows. You know they get less than minimum wage, right?

I'm not even sure how people do it - cough medicine tastes terrible. I can't even take a regular dose without wanting to vomit, I'm not sure how people drink an entire bottle of the stuff.

Especially when the old favorites still work so well. I can't tell if it's an access problem or the search for a new high that drives people to discover new drugs.
