Please tell me you don't find this video of a prototype material-handling robot from Boston Dynamics more than a little creepy:

According to its builder, "Handle" is 6.5' tall, can move at 9.5 mph, has a range of about 15 miles, can jump 4.5' vertically, and can pick up loads of more than 100 lbs. (Sorry for the lack of metric equivalents.)

Envisioned as a replacement for human labor in warehouses and distribution centers (no more bad backs from picking up heavy boxes) - I can imagine some evil genius equipping this with infra-red vision targeting software and a drum-fed carbine and turning it into a robotic predator, relentlessly hunting the rest of us down for sport.

That is creepy. Man...nothing throws it. Even one leg high and one low, no big deal. And yeah, not buying the warehouse thing....these are military/future robot overlords. Why would a warehouse robot need to do a running jump 15 feet in the air like a skateboarder?!!!

Think BIG! What we're watching is the equivalent of the Athenian city-state being reborn where everybody will eventually have robot slaves that do menial labor while their owners to devote copious free time to philosophizing and the arts.

I, for one, welcome our new robot underlings.

Someone needs to maintain those. I'll be working on a kill switch.

Saw the video early. Creepy indeed.

I guess the big questions are (1) how many laborers can it replace, (2) how much does the equivalent laborer(s) cost (not just salary, but benefits, litigation risks, etc.) and (3) how long until the price of the robot matches (1) and (2)?

Always fun to see human ingenuity outpace our maturity.

So a race to see who kills who first. My bet is unfortunately on the robots.

Are you intentionally being obtuse or did you just not read what I wrote?

Ok. I don't find it more than a little creepy, or a little creepy, or creepy at all.

I actually want to drive it around for a while. :p

Beauty in physics is what I saw.
In parts I have seen all of this for almost a decade, but a functioning assembly, that is quite spectacular.

The pace of human job loss due to robotics will only accelerate.
Coal miners will rapidly jobs in 2 years, for machines.
Robots building robots will accelerate, robots getting smarter is certain.

It just occurred to me, if Trump succeeds to drive a huge amount of low wage undocumented workers out, the demand for replacements will cause a boom in robo replacements.
Fruit crops would be literally ripe for picking.

    I see that too.

But I also see the need for at least a PhD to even get a minimum wage job fixing those things. :p

That's exactly right. Most people likely have no idea how insanely complex it is to get a machine to not only move in such a coordinated manner, but balance and shift it's weight like a living thing would. That was incredible.

If they really work as planned I can't see it going well.

This I think is basically unavoidable. Mining is dangerous, and even if you tax robots to (general) oblivion they will likely still make sense in mining. Robots can survive much longer if there's a collapse which traps them, and you can likely abandon a lot of the safety rules that you need for mining with humans. Plus mining is usually pretty well paid anyway - and has lots of negative health impacts.

I think it could well be a little bit of a false dawn, but lets see.

They lack sufficient battery, armor and stealth. We have beltfeds, API ammunition. Bring it cyberdyne.

Anyone can do that. Have you seen some of the post? A robot wouldn't fare any worse and might do better. :D
