Oh, come on, are you kidding? Putin and Obama have been dancing the usual dance; Putin wants to expand Russia's power and regain territories lost when the USSR dissolved; Obama wants to check him and maintain the status quo. And so, they've done all the standard things: make statements to the press, put together various economic carrots and sticks, and rattle sabres all over the place. Putin has gotten his hands a bit dirtier than Obama in sending conventional war forces into different regions, but other than that, they've played the same game. Nobody was advancing the doomsday clock, because nobody was really trying to stomp down directly on each other's toes.

Can't wait to see how the world reacts to Trump's incessant provocations, though... :(

If only we could expect him to fade into obscurity when he leaves office.

Mr. Nobel Peace Prize, awarded for his promise to work toward a world without nuclear weapons, is running out of time to use his nukeskies on the Russkies. This least reduction of nuclear weapons by Warbama was not by mistake:

Reduction of Nuclear Arsenal Has Slowed Under Obama, Report Finds

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/27/science/nuclear-weapons-obama-united-states.html

The new figures, released by the Pentagon, also highlight a trend — that the current administration has reduced the nuclear stockpile less than any other post-Cold War presidency.

What Obama did is just foolish. Forcing a new administration to deal with two big international crisis is not an acceptable behavior.

The problem is we haven't seen any proof that the Russian government was directly involved with the hack in the first place. However lets say for a second we did have irrefutable proof they were behind the hacks hasn't the U.S. been caught doing the same types of things?

You are sooo right! We should just knuckle under to Russia, and hand over all our internets to them. And sure, why not just help Israel kill all the Palestinians and take their land?

So are we going to take our internets back from ICANN to hand it over to the Russians?

So a week ago, you were hoping Obama would thump Israel and Russia in the nose in the coming days.

    Yeah, right.

No need to be an apologist. These two turns were unexpected, by anyone. And they are abjectly dumb****.

Just call him out. It doesn't hurt to say he's wrong.

We are not turning our backs on Israel, everyone voted that what Isreal is doing was what they agreed they wouldn't do. All we did was say we were not going to use our power(veto) to throw out everyone else's vote.

True, there's a double standard involved here; but it's a double standard that has become more-or-less accepted over thousands of years of international relations -- espionage is publicly an outrage, but privately everybody does it. Therefore, when the espionage performed by an international actor becomes known publicly, the response to it is different than when it is kept hidden.

I would imagine that all sorts of nations have tried all sorts of secret operations in other countries. The problem in this case is that, rather than just trying to uncover secrets for their own use, the Russians tried to uncover secrets and make them public to all American citizens. They tried to launder their ill-gotten-goods through a third party (Wikileaks in this case), but it's hard to completely erase the path through which such information has passed.

As such, we have here a case not of secret espionage, but rather very very public espionage. Russia stole our data, and everybody knows it. Letting Russia walk all over us in this manner is, at the very least, very embarrassing. And so, Obama has made some standard "we are outraged" talk, and some standard sanctions. If the usual game plays out, Russia should make its own "we are outraged" talk, its own round of standard sanctions, and then both sides wait for the issue to blow over so that they can go back to doing all the standard espionage activities again.

No. He should've discussed the plan of action with the next potus, who coincidentally will have to deal with the full extent of this self-made crisis.

As for Israel, Obama was elected in 2008, reelected in 2012. The issue has been around since the 1970's (if not earlier), and he wakes up 20 days before leaving (and after selling $gazillions in weapons to them)? Really? This is pure and simple revenge politics, the worst kind. I am appalled, shocked, and disturbed to know that a man I admire is capable of this.

If everyone knows it then we should have no problem providing evidence, the teams were dumb enough to fall for a phishing attack so let's see the emails and where the attacks originated.

Um, what??? Obama has never been happy with Israel's policies against Palestine. The UN vote was his last chance to make this crystal clear, and he took it. Also, Obama has for months now been decrying Russia's hacking, and for weeks has said he's going to do something about it. And now he has done so.

Anyone who didn't expect these two turns must not be keeping up with the news. Or do you just think so little of Obama, that you believed he's just going to crawl into a corner and hide until January 20th?

3 weeks before leaving office, in coordination with the countries who have wanted to drop this hammer for years, and against the wishes of the incoming administration.

If he wanted to pile on Israel he could have done it any of the 7 years he has been president, they haven't ever had a good relationship anyways.

You think he didn't? Trump's tweets and statements seem to indicate that he knew a little bit of what Obama was planning; why else did he make such a big, public push to influence the president before the vote happened?

I see so you would board an aircraft knowing there would be no Pilot in charge for the landing of said aircraft.

With respect you sound like a member of staff that hands his resignation in with the standard four weeks notice, and then 'throws a sickie' in the final week.

Yes! This is how we hoped you'd respond.

Name someone - anyone - who expected Obama to make these two moves this past week.

Or - as we know you will - move them cut lil' goal posts.

Hate to break it to ya but ain't no body at the helm right now.

    Link.
    Link.

In the US the standard is two weeks notice, and I'm smart enough to give myself a little break between jobs once I've given notice.
