Is it possible/safe to remove/unplug an external HDD (used for backups) when my system is configured/set up as follows:

A/C charging cable plugged in / external HDD plugged in / laptop/system itself has been shutdown.

I guess my real question would be, must I have my system (MBA) up and running and then click the HDD/My Passport for Mac icon in the upper right corner of the desktop screen and choose EJECT to have it prepared/set up for a safe removal? Or can I simply and safely remove/unplug without performing the above?

Any and all input/direction appreciated.

If your Mac laptop has been shutdown, then it is safe to disconnect the external HDD cable to the laptop. The process of shutdown ejects the external HDD.
