Caught this at NPR this morning, and thought it would be a good topic to discuss outside of the daily political rehash we keep doing.

Growing up, I was in the mix with nearly every group of people. I headbanged with the metalheads. I danced with the kids on the street, whether that be in baggy pants with kids on the street, or wearing suits that would make Steve Harvey proud. Metal, pop, (old school) hip hop, I loved it all. But back then we had limits, especially on 'how low can you go'.

Back then, even with baggy pants, they were still at the waist; if I couldn't keep them at my waist, I wasn't wearing them out of the house. Now, we have serious sagging, and some serious backlash. It's a bit lengthy, but have a read.

So what do you think about sagging? self-empowered, thug life street cred, or dangerous fashion, looking for something to happen?

People will butter it with rationalizations and excuses, but wearing sagging pants is deliberate self-segregation and a signal that any prejudices and ill-will you may bear against the pants-wearer are justified.

Sure, if you're white. Black parents are always on the alert for indications that their children may be drawn into a gang.

Sagging pants are indications of people being in a gang?

I'm black. And most kids, teens and even adults that sag their pants are not criminals, gangsters, or are at risk of going that direction.

    Or it can mean you're a plumber.:D
    [IMG]

As someone who does home maintenance every weekend, loose fitting jeans is the way to go. Plumber's crack is an inevitable side effect. Good thing the ordinance only applied to government property. I wouldn't want to be arrested for cleaning the rain gutters.:p

Saggy pants now mean gang membership. Holy ****, I drove past about 40 gangbangers this morning waiting for their school bus. Thanks for letting me know. I will now take an alternate route to work.

I can't speak for all black parents, but my friends are hyper-aware and do not permit their kids to affect any clothing or mannerisms that they consider gang-related, including saggy-pants, combs stuck in the hair, flashing signs, etc. Correct or not, they're just trying to be good parents.

Actually passing a law against sagging pants = too much free time

Why penalise people who can't afford belts? They have it hard enough already.

At least those who wear sagging pants have boxers and briefs on. I can't stand when I'm driving and a cyclist cuts in front of me bent over with half of his bare ass mooning me.
