It has two benefits: No exposed edge, and the outer screen can be a robust hardened glass screen instead of the soft screen required for the foldable panel. In the long run, it might also have the benefit that one third of the OLED screen hasn't degraded more than the other two thirds.
I’d rather have no outer screen, partially so that when I laid the device flat on a table to write on, I don’t have a screen pressed up against it.

Instead of using three separate inner screens, Samsung could’ve designed the folds so that the outer display becomes the middle screen, with the additional panels folding out from the back. Just thinking out loud.

I could replace a phone and iPad with one device, however it looks hella expensive and potentially fragile.
I’m imagining a $3k phone falling off table would give me heart attack!

1. "You're folding it wrong" alarm

2. Honestly, 3 folds make the aspect ratio better IMHO

3. Cue the "This is stupid" and the opposite "Apple is so far behind" posts
You know, we can see what posts you read before you left that comment, it diminishes the prescient effect ;)

Don't worry guys, we might get an updated speaker that can only play off your apple device as soon as apple can figure out how to create a modern voice assistant that can do more than recite the time aloud to you.

Counting down to US Tri Fold pre-order. My Fold 4, 5, and current 6 have been hands-down my favorite phones of all time. The Fold 6 is still great so I didn't swap it for the spectacular Fold 7. But I am more than ready to trade-in my Fold 6 for the Tri-Fold!

All that screen real estate while still thinner than my previous Fold 4 and 5, and less than 1 mm thicker than my Fold 6. If battery life gets me through a full day and price comes in at or below $3000 then I'm all in! 😀

With the Huawei design, a third of the soft foldable panel doubles as the outer screen, meaning it's exposed when the phone is in your pocket. It sounds like you really want the Samsung design minus the outer screen. Most people do want an outer screen, though, so that they can use the phone without having to unfold it.

While Apple does have patents filed for trifold phones, I bet they won't release one anytime soon.

In recent years, because Apple seemingly cannot grow market share anymore, Apple has been on a mission to increase their prices as well as selling more "add-ons" in order to further improve "share holder value".
Or in other words, Apple will fight tooth and nail to sell you an iPhone and an iPad - rather than just one device.

The only way I can see an Apple trifold phone happening is if trifold phones become the new norm and everyone else is already selling them everywhere, and Apple is forced to keep up with the Joneses ... or lose massive market share.
But we are at least a decade away from that point, I would guess. So do not hold your breath...

Apple likes to move methodically and carefully and only put money towards developing products they believe will sell like hotcakes and produce an enormous return on investment.

Meanwhile, Samsung just loves to tinker! Apple is using them as their unofficial R&D department. If Samsung invents something novel, superior, or interesting, Apple will surely consider copying their homework.

Wake me up when they solve color rich holograms; the real solution and the future. Large screen and minimal footprint.

What a time to be an open consumer. Being able to just buy bleeding edge tech that was only a dream not so long ago. No blind loyalty and convincing oneself that they're locked in to any one ecosystem. Life's too short to be spending thousands on the same pile, over and over, with nothing but a spec bump.

Is this satire? April 1st? Okay, now it's getting ridiculous. The small market share and the gimmicky folding phones weren't enough, and now we're getting a triple folding device. More potential points of failure and a higher price. How much will it cost? 3k? When the rumors about the foldable iPhone first surfaced, I joked that companies would start a race to see who could fold the screen the most, and now here we are.
Foldable phones are incredible to use. Even way back in 2021 with the thicker Fold 2 it was one of the most impressive pieces of handheld tech I had ever used at the time. If Apple had pioneered this first, bet you wouldn’t be talking smack.

Curious if this is the evolution of the 'smart phone'. I get that the Blackberry fanboys scoffed at the iPhone as a gimmick (no keypad, touch screen), but here we are. Are we now scoffing scoffing at what could inevitably be the next generation of 'smart phones'. I hope not. Can we just skip forward to holograms?

It’s exciting to see companies take risks and bring something new to the market. The Huawei tri fold is also pretty slick. Apple had a dominant position with its os but those days are behind us so the playing field has for sure been leveled and apple is looking quite stale. Folding phones aren’t new.

I see… and how does Apple Vision Pro fit into this narrative of yours?
