While Apple does have patents filed for trifold phones, I bet they won't release one anytime soon.

In recent years, because Apple seemingly cannot grow market share anymore, Apple has been on a mission to increase their prices as well as selling more "add-ons" in order to further improve "share holder value".
Or in other words, Apple will fight tooth and nail to sell you an iPhone and an iPad - rather than just one device.

The only way I can see an Apple trifold phone happening is if trifold phones become the new norm and everyone else is already selling them everywhere, and Apple is forced to keep up with the Joneses ... or lose massive market share.
But we are at least a decade away from that point, I would guess. So do not hold your breath...
iPhone Trifold will not be a suitable replacement for an iPad until they also invent a Magic Keyboard Trifold that doesn’t bulge up the pocket. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen an iPad in the wild without a keyboard, except for those glued to kiosks.

Cannot wait until Apple plays catchup. Instead of blowing BILLIONS on Apple Car or VP, will be nice when a CEO who understands products leads the company again. I don’t think VP is a waste, but it was obviously not ready for consumer release. The product people knew that and warned Tim. Tim had all these ideas about augmented reality and gave examples and then shipped nothing of the sort. The glasses need to be first and need to be small enough to look like they’re regular glasses but actually are smart glasses with displays and audio to the ear. Basically, need to start where Meta is already at!

When it comes to the foldable, Samsung and all the Android companies have been shipping for seven years. It’s going to sell far more than the iPhone Air and I love the Air. It’s just that people want to be able to be more portable. Just like iPad Pro, it should run whatever software we want not be limited. Apple is making the money and the customers are getting a raw deal.

Is this satire? April 1st? Okay, now it's getting ridiculous. The small market share and the gimmicky folding phones weren't enough, and now we're getting a triple folding device. More potential points of failure and a higher price. How much will it cost? 3k? When the rumors about the foldable iPhone first surfaced, I joked that companies would start a race to see who could fold the screen the most, and now here we are.
HUAWEI made a tri fold a year ago, and it is a smash hit in Chinese market

I doubt I will live long enough for Apple to produce one, but I am very interested to see how it plays out in Korea and what the price will be in the United States. It is just quirky enough that an early eighties tech nerd like me might actually like it, and maybe even want it. 👨‍🔬
It's 3.6 Million Won, which is about 2451 USD

If the test of time shows that it is indeed a tablet and a phone then they should start to sell well.
If the Apple device can replace my iPhone and iPad then maybe I'd pay the premium. I still think I'm most likely to go to a dumb phone and a small iPad that I can off board most of my apps to.

Did you miss that Huawei already launched a trifold last year?

I like Samsung's design better. Inherently the inner display will be more fragile and prone to scratches. By keeping it completely internal when in the pocket and not being used or carried around in the world, that keeps the display protected by only exposing the outermost display, which is probably gorilla glass.

Having the additional external display, however, probably makes this quite a bit more expensive.

I hate how much these are going to cost, but it's going to be pretty cool once Apple has an iPhone that unfolds into a full iPad. I'm hoping they do the smaller, more squat form factor, so that it unfolds into essentially an iPad mini. But I'm not buying any early generations of this tech. Waiting for it to mature before I'm going to blow that much money. I don't want to have to give up having a great camera system like the iPhone Pro has, or things like water proofing or battery life, maybe/maybe not display creases and durability issues, just to have a more expensive transforming iPhone.

Think Samsung will announce more details during Unpacked 2026. Think it will be $2499 at least. Would be great if the upcoming iPhone fold had similar cameras.

Samsung today introduced the Galaxy Z TriFold, its first smartphone that has three total screens and two folds instead of one. The Galaxy Z TriFold features a 10-inch display when opened, and a 6.5-inch cover screen when closed, with "minimized creasing."

The device has an inward-folding design that's meant to protect the main display, and Samsung says that the "easy opening and closing" folding mechanism has been engineered with an alarm that alerts the user if it's folded incorrectly. Samsung is using a titanium Armor FlexHinge with two differently sized hinges that work together with a dual-rail structure. Samsung claims that the new design offers a smoother, more stable fold despite the varying weight across each display, plus greater durability thanks to the inclusion of a "thin piece of metal" that protects the folding mechanism.

A third of the display is 3.9mm thick when the smartphone is unfolded, though it is thicker in the area with the triple-lens camera. The main center screen is a bit thicker at 4.2mm, and the screen with the side button is 4mm. There is a reinforced overcoat over a shock absorbing display layer for better resistance, and the aluminum frame keeps the screens from making contact with one another.

There's a 5,600 mAh three-cell battery system with one battery behind each display panel. Samsung says it is the largest battery that it has used in a smartphone to date. There are three cameras at the rear of the device, including a 200-megapixel wide angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra wide camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. There are two 10-megapixel selfie cameras on the cover screen and the main screen.

Galaxy Z TriFold users can use three different portrait-sized apps side-by-side, resize apps in a multi-window view, watch shows in full screen, or hold the device vertically for reading. Samsung added standalone Samsung DeX, so the Galaxy Z TriFold supports up to four workspaces with five apps running simultaneously. Samsung apps have been optimized for the larger screen, as has Google's Gemini Live.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is launching in Korea on December 12, and it will expand to other markets like China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the UAE later. It will launch in the United States in the first quarter of 2026, and pricing is unknown.

Can’t find a single image of what this phone looks like closed (how thick when folded-in)

Curious if this is the evolution of the 'smart phone'. I get that the Blackberry fanboys scoffed at the iPhone as a gimmick (no keypad, touch screen), but here we are. Are we now scoffing scoffing at what could inevitably be the next generation of 'smart phones'. I hope not. Can we just skip forward to holograms?
that means no privacy.

I always find it funny that Samsung, despite producing really interesting new hardware, just cannot help itself and has to copy Apple's marketing, right down to the lighting. Bro you're making cool stuff, you don't need to try to look like Apple!

I was in the Samsung store the other day. Props for the engineering on the fold devices but even the £2300 Fold 7 feels flimsy in your hands, like it’s easily going to break. The inner plastic screen doesn’t help. I’m not saying these are terrible phones but once you’ve been with the iPhone Air and it’s indestructible* feeling body its hard to pick up anything so thin that still has flex to it.

The inner display has a nice size to it but I binned the iPad Mini and went back to my 11” Pro because it was too small. A £3000 (I assume) tri-fold just looks like an accident waiting to happen. It’s always a little suss how generous Samsung is with its annual trade-in offers for Fold users. It’s almost like it doesn’t like the idea of them being on the market more than 24 months….

*Hyperbole, but it is the toughest iPhone out there.
