Search for "Paul Matthews" and "GT Advanced Technologies" at Linkedin.

He has the following on his profile page:

"Worked with GT Advanced Technology to help market and sell the idea of sapphire as a cover screen for mobile devices to Apple."

"Strategic Aspect:
After marketing and selling the ASF into the LED market targeted mobile screen covers as a market for growth, conducted a focused marketing campaign and developed a cost model across the supply chain that has brought sapphire to Apple’s mobile display"

Why need touch ID?
Eg have it linked with bluetooth or wifi to your phone. If it's somehow off your wrist and out of range, it locks?
Could do as the BoM is $7 or so, but fitting it in there with a device that small?

No, it is not. The separate TouchID cover part on the iPhone 5S is made of sapphire. But that sapphire does not have anything to do with GT Advanced Technologies, it is from another company (Rubicon).

This info completely kills the FUD from analysts about Apple building a HUGE sapphire manufacturing plant to use it only for TouchID and camera lens covers.
