Satechi today launched the ChargeView 240W Desktop Charger, a successor to the 140W ChargeView released last year. The ChargeView 240W can power multiple devices at one time, splitting 240W across six USB-C ports.

The ChargeView 240W has an LCD display that shows the live wattage of all ports that are in use. The C1 and C2 ports offer up to 140W each, while ports C3 and C4 can deliver up to 100W each. The final two ports offer up to 30W. These are maximum power levels, and actual wattage will vary based on how many ports are used at one time. If all six ports are in use, power would be split 70W/70W/30W/30W/20W/20W.

Satechi is offering the ChargeView in Space Black, and it has a metallic matte finish with a glossy display cover. The Space Black shade is meant to complement Apple devices like the MacBook Pro and Studio Display. There is an included stand that allows the ChargeView to be used in horizontal or vertical orientation on a desktop.

The ChargeView uses GaN technology so it is compact, and it has no fan, so it operates silently. Satechi notes that the device will redistribute power when a new device is plugged in, so there can be a momentary interruption in charging.

The ChargeView 240W can be purchased from the Satechi website or from Amazon for $149.99.

Boooo. This is a big issue for USB-PD power supplies as it means that multiport chargers can't be used to power things like NAS units or Raspberry Pis as connecting another device will cause a power cycle. There is a Sabrent 252 W unit that doesn't do this, but I'm not really aware of any others.

I think most would expect that a device with no battery needing an uninterrupted source of power would be on its own dedicated power source, no?

The SlimQ 150W doesn't do this, either. I absolutely refuse to buy another multi charger that disconnects a device when you connect another.

See I have this issue with the PD charger I got for my car. I have a CarPodGo Mini that is my CarPlay unit, and it requires a 9v PD power source, which is fine, but anytime I plug anything else into the charger it resets the CarPodGo because the power blips and the device has no battery.

Now I understand why, thanks!

Looks like a very good charger. Not going to buy one but will definitely keep in mind till the next time I purchase one.

Not at all. I would never expect any sort of power supply to ever cut power regardless of how many ports it has, except in emergency/overload situations.

This thing is going to cause a lot of people headaches.

That would be a problem with your expectations then. These devices aren't meant to permanently power things that don't have batteries and need 100% uptime - it's for charging devices. Almost all of these types of things work like this.

Even the "Sabrent 252 W" the other guy was talking about, it actually does drop power to renegotiate. The reason they think it doesn't is that it has two independent groups of ports, and so if you plug something into group a, and something into group b, there won't be an interruption. But if you plug two things into group a it's going to do the exact same renegotiation.

It would be great if none of them ever dropped power to renegotiate, but well over 90% of them do, and so let's not pretend your expectation is anywhere close to reality (for now at least).

That's not the case on the SlimQ 150W line (either 4x C or 3x C +1x A). Sure, it's not a 240W charger, but it means I can plug in my phone and my iPad or my phone and my 100W charging laptop and not have any interruptions, which is glorious.

Ideally all chargers would be able to do this, but would I say it's glorious? I'm sure your phone and iPad and laptop can cope with a brief interruption.

I also still wouldn't run something where uptime was critical and it had no battery off this device. If you plug in a combination of devices where the request is more than 150w, it will drop power and renegotiate.

I'll admit I haven't read the USB-PD Spec as I haven't needed to, but I always chalked this behavior up to a limitation in the USB-PD specification more than the chargers themselves. My assumption has been that USB-PD negotiates its power delivery upon connection with no ability for the charger to re-negotiate. That forces charger manufacturers to have no choice but to power cycle to force a new USB-PD handshake to occur where they can advertise their new lower limit.

This may change in the future, but I am sure the USB IF thought this wouldn't be a major problem due to the primary use case for it being laptops and mobile phones which all come with built in batteries.

You could, but for those who want to power several devices in a small cabinet one power supply is better for efficiency and saving space. A friend of mine had a cabinet full of consumer network equipment and they all had a separate power adapter. Those adapters alone generated a lot of heat, so replaced it with one more efficient power supply. This reduced the heat significantly and in the long run saved him a bit on his energy bill too (generated heat costs money).
 
I have an older Anker charging station that seems nice. I think it is 100 watts. It performs just fine. The neat thing is that it does not have any glowy lights on the device. So I can have a nice dark bedroom at night, not a space lit up like day. The Satechi device seems to have LEDs on it's face that will be lit up and can't really be switched off while the device is charging. That may be a plus for any room except a bedroom.

I'm going to look at whatever Apple announces in September, and let that determine (1) whether I buy a new device, and (2) whether the Anker charger needs to be updated. My needs are simple so I can see the Anker staying in service a few more years.

Getting close to being able to power a decent-sized refrigerator and a pair of AirPods. Now we just need the EU to mandate USB-C connectors on appliances. 🤣

It’s a charger, not a power supply….bug difference between the two.

You could, but for those who want to power several devices in a small cabinet one power supply is better for efficiency and saving space. A friend of mine had a cabinet full of consumer network equipment and they all had a separate power adapter. Those adapters alone generated a lot of heat, so replaced it with one more efficient power supply. This reduced the heat significantly and in the long run saved him a bit on his energy bill too (generated heat costs money).
Right a power supply, not a charger. This isn’t a UPS. You need the right tool for the right job.

You don't get a free lunch with heat by using a USB-C multiport adapter.
 
Damn, I wish they had this last year before I bought the 4 port USB-C Anker 240w with the 2 useless USB-As on the side. I could use a 6 port USB-C only charger like this. Now another debate if to upgrade or not. LOL
