This video is the closest thing I've ever had to a religious experience in a long, long time. It's long, but well worth the watch. I watched it -- then immediately watched it again -- it's that amazing.

Beautiful. And just goes to show how much we don't yet know. Those who claim to offend me at every level. We have so much to learn.

What an awesome video. Makes our petty problems here on Earth seem pathetic huh? :)

I feel really small and insignificant...and since watching that video I've been reading up on the size of the universe.

Coming from a religious person I thought the video was really well done.

P.S. I also love looking at space and its infinite expanse.

So I guess Jewel can stop asking: it was science.

(I also loved the video. ;))

    Liked the video.

But to be fair anything narrated by a brit, new-zealander, or Australian is automatically enthralling.

Love the message and you're right! I watched it twice, straight through (minus the ending music video) and it brought a tear to my eye.

Liked the video... though I thought he was a little too rough on religion.

There is something that's behind it. Sure, it's ruined by the political/institutional side of things, but the personal experience is transformative... and that ain't a bad thing.

Religious experience is probably something that science will encompass and explain one day... a side of awareness and consciousness that seems unfathomable and supernatural, yet is just beyond our current capability to understand.

Not a big, bearded man living in the sky.... something far more interesting.

    Peace.

    No there isn't what?

    Awareness?

    Consciousness?

    Peace?

No, there really is. Our brains are evidently adapted in such a way as to enable what some might refer to as "transformative experiences," and lacking substantive explanations for something that seems so profound, exceedingly vulnerable to the temptation to invent nonsensical ones.

But the cause is in us. No magic.

As the video implies, reality is more magical than anything the human mind could dream up.

If you redefine "magic" to include things that result from natural physical causality, then the word loses all significance. We already have perfectly serviceable words like "amazing" that mean this without being easily confused for support of supernatural nonsense.

There's nothing wrong with the word as it's defined...

any extraordinary or mystical influence, charm, power, etc., mysteriously enchanting; magical: magic, beauty.

    Isn't that amazing?

Since this usage is metaphorical with the primary meaning of effecting change in the physical universe though supernatural means, and given the subject matter of the video, it is a very poor choice of words that invites confusion as to whether you mean metaphorical magic, in the sense of that which inspires awe or wonder, or literal magic, of which there is no such thing.

But as this is patently obvious, and has been for several posts, I can only surmise you are being intentionally difficult.

Perhaps the difficulty you sense comes from within.

It could just be the eggnog.

Very nice! The wonder of pure science...

No magical mysticism or other such deluded nonsense.

So there is no such thing as magic or mysticism? I really like the definition of magic as something that is "mysteriously enchanting". The problem is not being open to the concept but conclusions that are guessed at.

I feel that the concept of "infinity" is magical. You can grasp the concept as in never ending, but can you really understand the reality of it? I can't.

Yeah, infinity is something I can never quite get my head around. I think it's there to remind us of the limitations of the human mind. Stop us getting all uppity and know-it all! :)

Anyway, the linked video was a bit long, so here's the snappier 3 minute Monty Python version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buqtdpuZxvk . I love the last line. So true. :)
