Only 60 scientists?
Did they really need 60 scientists to confirm that? I thought everyone knew that Bladerunner is the sci-fi movie to sum up the entire genre.
Blade Runner my arse...
Love that flick....
Is there a top 10 or 100 list?
I would be Contact up there as well.....
That link didn't have much, so here it is from the source.
Did they vote for the originalcommentary ridden happy ending studio version.. or the totally different and worthwhile Directors Cut?
The link says the release of 1982 but I have my anorak-cloaked doubts......
I like the fact that Alien made the top five
Never did see the original Russian version of Solaris, though.....all the others I've seen, all more than a few times.
Scientists? These guys are idiots...
Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back aren't Science Fiction. They're fantasy movies set in space.
Alien, on the other hand, friggin ROCKS!!
Yeah, a post-doc in my lab told me about this. We agree, damn good movie!
2001 space odessey
1 Blade Runner (1982)
2 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
3 Star Wars (1977 ) / The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
4 Alien (1979)
5 Solaris (1972)
seems about right. The original Solaris is awesome.
I would throw into the mix The Fly(1986), Metropolis(1927), Close Encounters (1977), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and The Matrix (1999)
and borderline Sci-fi: Dr. Strangelove (1964), Clockwork Orange (1971), Delicatessen (1991)
Where's 'Dark Star'?
my top 5:
i. the andromeda strain (quite possibly my favorite movie, but the book's better)
ii. star trek 4 whales in space or star trek 3 the search for spock
iii. fahrenheit 451. cheesy special effects and stupid accents but the book kicks ass which puts the movie up some places
iv. i robot
v. planet of the apes (the original)
and oh yeah, spaceballs
1) Blade Runner
3) Road Warrior
5) 12 Monkeys
I would have put Brazil at #5 but I don't think that it's setting is enough to earn it classification as a Sci-Fi movie.
What? Spaceballs didn't make the list?
Silent Running for me!
I have to agree that SPACEBALLS deserves at 2nd place!
I like their list. http://dailytelegraph.news.com.au/story.jsp?sectionid=1267&storyid=1845499
I agree Contact should be in the 11-20 group.
And Dune as well, thats a really food scifi..definetly in my top 20
Mad Max 2 / Road Warrior is also a huge movie but not sci fi I guess to be considered?
Star Gate I liked and was pretty influential as well...
Total Recall was not bad either...maybe abother 11-20 contender
Totally agree! Beats me why they need this austire group to tell us what we already know!
Just made a DVD copy, er. backup set of Alien 1-4.
Alien is definitely the sh_t!
I will probably never forget seeing in the theater either. My GF at the time damn near squeezed me to death when the little feller was hatched (stomach scene). That was a painful movie to see!
I also enjoy the other 3 as well eventhough the suspense was not the same.
It was number 2!
I wanted to see Alien when it was released in theaters but for some reason it was a "limited release" and no theater near me had it
