I always promise myself I'll sell the older iDevice, but it's a promise I rarely keep.

Going all the way back to launch day, June, 2007.

I always sell mine in order to subsidise the cost of the new one otherwise I couldn't afford to upgrade every year.

No point in keeping them. iTunes backs up absolutely everything on your old iPhone and transfers it to the new one. They're too valuable not to sell when you get a new one. If you need a backup an iPhone 3G or cheap android can be gotten for less than $50

Keeping my iphone 4 for sentimental reasons, but others i would find someone to give it to if it's 2 years old, or sell if it's 1 year old.

Kept the original one from 2007 for WiFi use, still use it
Gave the 3GS to a neighbor's kid to use as WiFi device
Keeping the 4S as a WiFi device (and as my favorite e-reader)

I agree about keeping something for a spare phone but I have an old LG CU515 on a 2nd line that still works ok so far.
