I am selling my iPhone on facebook and gumtree uk so the sale will be in person. I was thinking if I erase it they won't be able to check it works as it will just show a white hello screen.

However if I show it working and then erase it I don't want to be sat for a long time while they reconsider the sale, price and give extra haggle/awkward time. Although I can't remember how long an erase will take (256gb iPhone XS).

Any thoughts, recommendations?

What? Just go thru welcome screen. Then when you meet up they can verify everything works. No hassle. Pop the sim make a call. Send a text. Safari. Done deal. They can later erase everything again and do what they want with it.

I would not erase it just yet. I would invite the buyer to a location with WiFi where I will turn off iCloud only if the buyer shows interest to not scam me and erase it on the spot.

How long does an erase normally take?

I would erase it and then set it up enough to get to the homescreen without putting any of your personal info back on it.

100% this; you can go through the HELLO screen and set up the basis without putting a sim or your Apple ID.

I only erase my iPhone after I made the sale, which means that it still has all security functions activated before I receive my money. Wouldn't want them to be able to just grab the phone and run off, even if that seems like an unlikely scenario.

It can happen, never to me, but is an option (the run off I mean).

Hmm need 5-7 mins of idle distracting banter.

No need...just let them erase it on their own time.

Wipe it first to remove any of your personal info, then go through the set up to get to the home screen without putting any of your personal info in it (it will ask for an Apple ID during setup, but you can tell it that you don’t have one and you’ll add it later in setup).

Then the phone will be operational and they can test it and once they’re happy with it you can just walk away... they can reset it on their own. It doesn’t have any of your personal info at that point so you don’t care if they wipe it or not.

perfect thanks, never knew you could set up an iPhone without an Apple ID
