    Seattle Times link

The voting went nearly down party lines--no shocker there, since there are no repercussions for the GOP to shoot it down, knowing it would pass anyways. On the flip side, when are the Dems (they own this one*) going to realize that we can't keep spending money that we don't have? Also in the works apparently is a bill to raise the debt ceiling...

*the GOP did its fair bit increasing the debt under Bush--but make no mistake, the new spending now falls squarely on the shoulders of the Dems/Obama, presuming that he signs it. The "they did it too" argument just doesn't matter...past sins aren't forgiven, but there's no excuse for making it worse.

This is the budget for next year right? I haven't ever heard it referred to as a "spending bill".

Just using the language from the Seattle Times--which, incidentally, is hardly a Fox News property.

What was spending this year? $1.1 trillion doesn't sound particularly high for a country as big and rich as the US.

Its not that much more than the British government budgets, and we are 5x smaller.

As the article says, it's hardly the whole budget...just a piece of it.

This bill is a joke. These guys just don't get it. This bill does not include military spending. It has close to $5 billion in earmarks and represents an almost 12% increase in spending over last year. Out inflation rate is pretty much zero.

my bad, I should have read further down, at first it sounded like a simple budget, but it seems there is all kinds of crap tacked onto it and some things left out (as has been pointed out).

Why are federal workers getting a 2% pay increase? Did we really do a better job this year to deserve that while everyone else is losing their job?

    The 2009 budget. Bush's budget.

    Lots of good info there.

This 1.1T amount is only "part" of the budget.

I wouldn't say we're rich anymore. We owe too much to fall in that category. We're broke.

It's not that simple anyways. It's not a matter of Bush having "spent" a fair bit as well, it's a matter of what he spent it on, the infrastructure he left behind, and the projects he started that will need to be paid for, IE the conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan. I'm not saying this to defend Obama's spending policies, but rather to dispel the notion that there's some kind of equivalence found merely at the dollar value attached to spending bills.

I see your point. But increasing the spending is extremely hard to defend. Maintaining things already in place...more so. The increases are extremely hard to figure, though.

Well, there weren't really doubts about Obama's balls...after all, he's been so decisive about things like Don't Ask Don't Tell...he blows in the wind wherever he thinks the popular sentiment/political expediency is. If you still think otherwise, you're either naive or have your head in the sand.

Hopefully he will pull out his scalpel and trim all the fat out of the bill.

Last I looked, he isn't a surgeon and the President does not have a line item veto.

He is free to veto it and let congress know what they need to do to get a bill passed.

Didn't Obama say this during his debates with McCain:

He should veto any bill that hasn't been trimmed and send it back to congress for them to get it right.

What he should do, and what he actually does will probably be two different things.

If he shows congress he means business about passing quality bills, they will be less likely to pass a healthcare bill that is a piece of crap.

Based on how it's been gutted and watered down, they should scrap it. Put it out of its misery and try again next year.
