Setup iPad from iPhone backup - some things weren’t restored

I've just picked up the new iPad. As I have a lot of email accounts and other things I don't really want to manually set up, I decided to restore it from my iPhone backup.

The problem is, even though I'm using an encrypted backup in iTunes, it won't restore any of the email accounts. It also won't restore my home screen shortcuts that I added from safari, and it hasn't preserved my folder structure on the home screen, though these aren't as much of a problem as the email accounts.

I've tried backing up the iPhone and restoring it to the iPad twice, but it's still the same issue.

I've never had this problem in the past going from iPhone to iPhone, so I'm guessing it's because I'm trying to restore an iPhone to iPad, but I didn't think it would cause a problem.

Has anybody else had this problem?

I’ve spent the night setting all my accounts back up and checking through all of my apps. Each app that had a login asked me to enter my password again.

It’s as though I’ve used an unencrypted iTunes backup, but it was definitely encrypted. Each time I restored, it asked me for the password for the encrypted backup file.

I wonder if it’s possibly a bug in the latest iTunes, or maybe something unique to my setup. I don’t have the time to start setting everything back up on my phone if the same thing happened again, otherwise I’d wipe my X and restore just to see if it worked.

I always highly suggest starting fresh with your first iPad. Carrying all the cruft you've accumulated on your phone to your iPad probably does more harm than good.

You've probably spent more time cleaning up the resulting mess than you would have just setting up the accounts on a fresh iPad.

Thanks......I’m really enjoying it so far. Gonna spend today trying out some new apps and playing with the pencil. I’ve downloaded affinity to see how it performs. The idea is, that if I find the iPad/pencil combo useful, I’ll give this to the kids and grab the new pro when it releases later in the year.

I’ve never had a problem setting my iphones up from a backup, so I didn’t think there’d be any problems.

I wanted most of the stuff from my iPhone to carry over to the iPad, so apart from entering passwords, setting the mail accounts up again and reorganising my home screen, I haven’t had to do anything else.

If I’d set up from new, I’d have lost all of the customisations I’ve made over the years in various apps, and had to re-enter a lot more info than I have doing it this way.

I know it’s a divisive subject, but I will always restore from backup unless I have issues, in which case I’ll set up as new as a troubleshooting step.

I’ve just opened the messages app for the first time since setup and found that none of my messages were restored to the iPad.

It absolutely isn’t to be expected......everything should have transferred across to the iPad.

Well, in my personal case, restoring a new phone from backup makes sense because it's the same type of device. An iPad is a different type of device with a different use case so restoring the phone to it makes less sense for me.

I believe Messages is one of the things that Apple specifically states will not restore to an iPad from an iPhone.

Ok...thanks for that. Do you have a source for that, as when I spoke to Apple support, they believed they should have transferred.

I understand that, but all the data for my third party apps actually did transfer......it’s the Apple stuff that didn’t.
