in attempting to access files on my mac from a PC, i am able to log in as the OSX user, but then am only able to access that users directory... how can i access the root of the system? i.e. Macintosh HD, connected firewire drives, etc...

I did it by editing my smb.conf file to include references to the volumes.

hmm.. well.. i don't seem to have that file anywhere on my HD.. and even if I did, I wouldn't know how to add the reference! anyone?
