Washington DC is going to decide for statehood and come out with a possible state constitution. Your view?

Well, as I remember it, DC was created as a special "Federal State" and permanent Capitol City of the US. Since it's in the Constitution I'm not sure what the process would be for Statehood...That said, residents should be able to be represented in Government. Tricky question...Allocate population to neighboring States...?

They have representation, the Representatives just don't have a vote.

    And what was the purpose?

    Doesn't sound like representation then.

Partially to avoid the perception of favoritism.
    This explains it pretty well.

    From your source ...
    Say whut?
Nobody is beholden to anybody these days. Everybody hates each other. Madison's worries are unfounded in the reality we live today.

I think I'll trust the opinion of the Founders vs anyone today.

Just because members of the government have become dishonorable as he mentioned doesn't mean government which was created by the Founders is flawed. It shows the flaws of the people.

I"m all for DC becoming a state if the residents vote for it .... AFTER territory from another state(s) is ceded to be the new federal district and AFTER the tens of trillions of dollars are spent to build all the necessary federal buildings in the new district. Any residents in this new district, of course, would have no representation in Congress and Congress would be the direct legislative body for the new district just as it is for DC now.

    So what's the point then?

Slavery was abolished well over 150 years ago. Can we please, for the love of CHRIST, stop talking about slavery?!

DC is a blue town. No way they become a blue state.

The people need representation with voting power. 435 representatives are not a good way to govern the residents of DC. They have zero ties to them.

If they do, please take on a different name. Christopher Columbus doesn't need any more hero worship by having something else named after him, especially after all of the atrocities he committed. Not even his home country acknowledges him.

    That being said...

If they do go for statehood, that will bring a quandary in itself. For Statehood for DC to occur, we'd have to repeal the 23rd Amendment. Not really going to happen, given the state of Congress, let alone getting 3/4 of all State Legislatures to ratify an amendment to repeal the 23rd.

And seeing how some amendments have taken over 100 years to ratify, I don't see that process happening anytime soon.

Uh no, because that in no way changes the fact that many of our founding fathers... these men we seem to worship as "flawless individuals whose wisdom far exceeds our own"... were slave owners.

The Mexicans and southern Americans used to sacrifice their own. Do we still talk about it? No. Let's move on already. Please. It's such a tired argument and comment.

For purposes of congressional representation, residents of DC should be apportioned to Maryland and vote for federal offices and ballot questions as if they were residents of Maryland.
