I am currently using an iPhone 8 which has a warranty that will expire next month. I will want another phone with applecare+ as I have two unpredictable toddlers. I really want an OLED screen for dark mode and faceID will be a nice touch as well. I could potentially save hundreds with a used/warranteed XS. Should I go latest and greatest or just XS?

He should see the camera first, of course. All camera phones today are great, it's just the degree to which they are great.

The wide angle lens is all but officially confirmed. And Apple has repeatedly nailed hardware-enabled processing to improve camera quality.

Actually, they're pretty far behind Google in that category. It's part of the reason I would say take a look at the camera output and read reviews first. iPhone XS has a Pixel 2 level camera. If a wide-angle is added, it still needs to be better overall.

iPhone is behind in the camera game

Gotta be in it to win it

I disagree. If one takes the entirety of how a camera and video would be used, the Xs comes out near the top. If one wants to pick on one scene type alone, that may make a difference.

Based on the pictures in the thread you started the pixel isn’t all that ahead of the iPhone.

Sorry OP but the argument of buying a new device for $1000 to get warranty doesn’t make much sense.
As your 8 is probably only worth $300 u can 3 times just buy them used if ur kids manage to destroy them and still save money.

If u wanna save money stay 8. If u want something new buy 11. And if u wanna save just a bit buy used xs. obviously

If you have toddlers I would spend a bit of extra cash and go with the 11 for the improved camera.

It's an extra few hundred $ for priceless memories.
Solid point. This is one of the reasons I want to upgrade. I've still never used portrait mode, ever.

Good point. I doubt the quality will decline but Apple is definitely not infallible.

Good point. It's not just the warranty, but also camera/OLED/faceid. Thus far they have not detroyed any phones but they have definitely thrown them and dropped them. I had to use the applecare+ once because rain penetrated the phone and destroyed it and that was my fault (well, Apple's poor design imo)/

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!

I’d get the XS and save lots of money and help show Apple they cannot charge such ridiculous prices for iPhones! And get a nice warranty on it.
You’ll be blown away with the change from an iPhone 8.
The speed is ridiculous, it’s incredibly smooth, you’ll have that OLED although if Apple improve that this year I’d check out an 11 first, some people get headaches with the iPhones OLED, and the camera is great.

I have an iPhone XR and the one thing it certainly is not is slow! iOS is the smoothest it’s ever been on it in fact. The XS will be the same.

wow can't imagine much faster. Though my A10 iPad was kind of sluggish this morning, but that's another system. thanks for the input. In 2017 I had an S7 edge which also had OLED and didn't get headaches. I wonder what is causing that issue. I really miss "dark mode" and I am shocked its essentially 3-4 years until apple caught on.

better video? Sure. But the still photo camera is far superior on Pixel. So far superior the camera overall is superior with only one sensor. Simple as that.

Portrait mode is a GAME CHANGER!!!

The answer is very easy. Wait until 11 is released and either get it, or you can get a NEW iPhone Xs at discount due to the new model release.

That way you have your pick and don't have to get a USED phone (eww).

I think the XS would offer you plenty of new features that won’t be drastically different from the iPhone 11 launching in September, aside from the triple lens camera and reverse charging.

The most obvious choice would be maybe just to wait to see if there’s anything that would compel you to want the newest iPhone launching versus the 2018 XS.

Exactly. Wait and see. I would lean towards the discounted model if camera is only part of the picture. I don't know though. I'm still on the fence about the next iPhone leaning towards spending my money elsewhere.

If it has applecare plus and its in good shape, I honestly don't care if its new or used. But new is always nicer, of course.

Oh i'll definitely wait. The XS resale value is about to plummet.

Yeah thus far the X, XS, and XI do not all seem to be distinctly better than one another yet.
