Someone has offered me to help checking the battery price of MacBook and he asked me for the serial number. May I understand him that he want to check my MacBook model to match with the battery model?

Although I already know which MacBook model I have, I want to focus on the case that should we keep our serial number privately?

Did you ask why he wanted the serial number? You don't need a serial number to determine the correct replacement battery. Just the model number of the Macbook.

He may want to know the serial number to see if the original battery is under a recall or extended warranty program, but even then, you don't need the whole serial number. Just the first few digits will be enough to see if the original battery qualifies for a replacement under an extended warranty or recall.
