I generally upgrade every year but the one thing I do differently is that I get the previous model for nearly half the price. When the iPhone X came out, I scored an iPhone 7 for cheap. When the iPhone XS came out, I then upgraded my 7 to an iPhone X. I didn't mind waiting a year because I saved hundreds of dollars and still got a new phone.

But this year, with the advancements in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro's cameras, it just isn't worth it. The Ultra Wide and night mode make it pointless to buy a used XR or XS now. I really wanted to upgrade my wife's iPhone 7 Plus to a XR this year but I feel like I'm wasting my money because she won't have night mode. As for myself with the X, I will skip upgrading to the XS this year and will have to wait it out next year for the 11 Pro.

If night mode is of paramount importance. Then it's not worth the upgrade. It all depends on one's priorities. I'd say ask her if night mode is worth an extra $350 to $600 to her (depending on model). If not the the Xr/Xs at half the price is certainly a worthwhile upgrade. A big upgrade over the 7.

Edit: That money saved could buy all sorts of other cool gear which may be more interesting to her than the better camera.

It's not like the XS camera is suddenly junk. There was a really good camera update this year, but the XS still takes really nice shots... just not so much in low light.

I went from the X to XS max last year and didn't think it was much of an upgrade, apart from just wanting the bigger size. I'd skip it and wait for the 11.

The enhanced editing abilities in the 13 photo app let you get close to night mode. It just requires some editing while night mode does the work for you. Doesn't help with the ultra-wide mode issue however.

I bought a 256gb XS for $620 and sold my 256gb X for $600.

Also bought the neural cam night shot app for $3

So, surprise the wife and get her an iPhone 11. You make it sound like it'll be worth it.

funny. Most people feel the other way OP, think that this is the most modest update in year and most (myself included) don’t find a compelling reason to update. If night mode is something you really need then go for it, otherwise stick to your usual pattern
