I say, "Text xyz, I'll be home at 5PM". Siri will sometimes generate & send an email instead of sending a SMS. Should I be saying "message" instead of "text"?

You should just be able to say "text john" and it should send as a text.

I have been but intermittently Siri will send an email instead of a SMS when I say "text". Very annoying.

    "Email [Name] 'Email Text Here'"

    Works just fine for me.

Siri can't read email, but it can email. There is a difference in how Siri replies between email and sms. Siri will ask for a subject line if you send an email.
