Hi, I have recently upgraded my phone to an iPhone X from a 7plus, since then I needed to update my Macbook from El Capitan to OS X Mojave in order to watch 4k video and portrait photos correctly

Now with Mojave I can see my 4k content, but the playback from Photos app is slow and choppy....

If I drag the video out of Photos and play it with Qicktime, playback is smooth

my MacBook is a 13" 2014 Macbook Pro with i7, 16gb and 512gb ssd, how is it possible to perform so bad from Photos app??

I also have bought an ATV 4k to stream my content to Tv, hadn't opened and installed yet, but I am worried to get that poor performance with 4k videos again...

I think Photos recompresses the video when you drag it out… try to export the unmodified original from the File menu. Anyway, 4k HEVC is a bit heavy to decode. Newer Macs have a hardware decoder.

you are right, exporting the original unmodified from photos gets the same choppy playback....

pretty disappointed with this, 4k videos from my iPhone 7+ plays perfectly smooth from Photos app

and I don't want to change mi "good old" 2014 MacBook Pro, I am pretty happy with it, all of its I/o ports and don't want to anything newer
