I have a 2006 1.83 GHz iMac that has an external HDD connected for Time Machine back-up.

It has been working fine until this morning when I've been getting error messages about problems with the external HDD (usually saying it can't back up the disk), and then just now there is this latest message:

Anyone know what I can do to resolve this?

run Disk Utility and try Repair Disk for the volume in question. It sounds like you either have a corrupted file system or a failing disk.

I had that happen several times, but on ML. Each time, I ended up having to reformat the disk and start time machine backups from scratch. In a thread here, I asked if other folks saw this issue- the answer was no and someone recommended I get a new external drive. I did get a new external drive and have not seen the issue again.

Just FYI, the drive that caused me issues was an ioMega and the one that has been working fine for some time is a WD.
