I've had my machine (SR 2.2Ghz) for about a year now and there has only been a couple instances when I got some odd (single pixel) lines across the screen or something like the characters got distorted upon scrolling down a page (viewing in safari). So that's not what bothers me, however very often when I wake-up the machine the display is very "washed-out" and I'll need to put it back into sleep and wake it up again or reboot it. THen the display returns to normal.

Is this a sign of a failing GPU? Thanks.

Officially screwed... man I really want a mbp.. but I just dont trust Nvidia.

Also I really hope apple uses ATI cards in the next up coming macbook pro, but I have a feeling nvidia again and I'll be staying away from that too..

ATI is not all clean either, I had an iBook G3 which had a bad ATI graphic chip. It was months out of warranty. I performed an "oven treatment" from the internet and it came back to live. I guess the solder spot melt and reconnected with the board under the heat.

Umm no...

The first two lines:

MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz)
MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz)

...represent santa rosa machines with those specs

the last line:

MacBook Pro (Early 2008)

...represents all current penryn macbook pros - including the 2.4/256MB and the 2.5 and 2.6 /512MB models.

They could have made it easier by saying ALL MacBook Pros with the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT chipset are affected.

I understand what you're saying, but someone posted above that Nvidia changed it's manufacturing process and newer chips aren't affected. Now, if Apple knew about this 6 months ago and did nothing about it/kept selling computers they KNEW were faulty, that's a real problem.

There is no evidence whatsoever that nVidea have changed their manufacturing process.
Apple have stated faulty notebooks were on sale until September. That's just over a week ago.
No one has guarranteed the faulty chips will be replaced with anything other than the same type of chip that failed in the first place. Apple are just promising to keep on replacing the wonky chips with all new wonky chips for two years from date of purchase.
If the replacement chips are not subject to the same fault then I want hard evidence not rumours of a rumour.

Stop the denial Nvidia... it's out of the bag, admit it, replace it and move on or out of business as a consequence of broad deception.

So are you saying that no matter what Apple release (or anyone else current or future, for that matter, whose products you might decide are drool-worthy one day) you'll refuse to buy it if it has an nvidia part inside it? Sadly, you've limited your computing options a great deal if you want to pursue that, in fact you may have kissed good bye to Apple if they keep using nvidia.

This is why even "complex" monopolies are bad.

They could have made it easier by saying ALL MacBook Pros with the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT chipset are affected.

Well whether or not that is accurate, that sounds much worse from a PR point of view than producing a range of affected dates or models or whatever, even if that range ends up adding up to everything.

It's natural to fear the unknown. In this case, the rumored nvidia chips.

I say let's wait for them to come out and then we'll decide.

Deciding to forego the new macbook pro just because it'll have nvidia chips severely limits yourself.

Now if it was the 8600GT that's a whole different matter.

I highly doubt that since Apple has acknowledged the problem, they will put faulty chips in their laptops.

Apple is not that evil.

ATI is not all clean either, I had an iBook G3 which had a bad ATI graphic chip. It was months out of warranty. I performed an "oven treatment" from the internet and it came back to live. I guess the solder spot melt and reconnected with the board under the heat.

This isn't ATI being "not all clean", this is a honest to goodness fault, they do happen you know.

There's a big difference between a big design flaw that more or less guarantees that a particular GPU will fail no matter where it is found, and a fault on a machine which causes problems for that machine.

Having said all that, ATI aren't magically immune from making mistakes, and nvidia's new gear is probably being checked and tested for this kind of problems very carefully indeed by both nvidia and the OEMs who got burnt by the 8600M, so things should be much better with their newer products.

So does anyone know if the GPUs in the free replacement will "fixed" or will they be the same bad ones which will pack in again? There seems to be a mixed argument here, so which is true? Also, is the article about Nvidia changing their solders true and will this be the fix?
Thanks

Same, that was the reason why I got a good spec so I could run new software in 3 or 4 years time, but NO! The graphics card will have packed in by then :'(

So i bought my Mac book pro in march 2008... And i don't have apple care.. What can i do not to get screwed? Can i ask for a new Mac book pro at the end of the year since the GPU's are faulty? ^^

Lol ok thanks ^^ Well it is their fault after all... at least they're offering to pay for the replacement of the video card if it breaks..

I don't think it's gonna break... it's just gonna wear out faster than it should i think.. That's why they're offering to pay for the repairs if your video card stops working properly before two years after purchase...
I still find it very frustrating to buy a multi thousand dollar computer and still have to worry about the GPU melting down...

O my bad i didn't understand the question... Well i dunno if it's gonna break.. They just say that they're willing to pay for the repairs wether that means they're just gonna put a new one or actually fix the problem i dunno... They'll probably just change it and then when that one breaks your computer will probably be more than 3 years old and they'll concider it's not their fault... It's pathetic.. What happened to hardware actually working more than two years. Plus, i have the feeling apple's products specifically don't last very long. Does anyone share that opinion or am i just unlucky?

This MBP is my first ever Mac and its got a faulty GPU in it! That's just fantastic luck! So far I'm not liking Apple and their products. Firstly my reinstall CDs were dodgy and I called up Apple and they said they would ship replacements in 3 working weeks. 3 working weeks later, no CDs, I rang them up again and they said there were none so they had to make some more, they could have at least rang me to say they would be late, also they wouldn't have posted them anyway until I rang up again to redo the order WTF!!!. They finally arrived another week later. When I needed to order a replacement Windows XP cd from Dell it came in 2 DAYS!!!!!!! now thats good customer service. Then next thing I realise is that my MBP has a faulty GPU in it. I don't want to go back to PCs because of the operating system, but if anything else goes wrong I think I will have to go back. They now say they are replacing the bad GPUs but is unspecific as they could be replacing bad ones with more bad ones. Great impression you have made Apple. I'll have a lot of good things to brag about being an Apple customer wont I!!!

Some of you guys are planning on complaining very loudly but that won't get you what you want.

A while back I worked at Customer Service in a grocery store (ugh). The customers that came up to us with courtesy and legitimate need were serviced with the utmost speed and quality. The customers who came up to us as if they are the only individuals in the world experiencing problems were, for the most part, ignored. Repeat offenders were asked to leave and not come back.

If you've had tons of issues with your machine, write a neat , well said letter stating your concern and outlining your professional usage and how it has impacted you. If you can state all of your current apple purchases and your future apple endeavors if Apple will help you out in this manner.

What sounds better:

"ZOMG MY 'ISH BROKE WHILE I WAS TRYING TO EDIT MAH MEWVIEZZ GIMME A NEW MASHINEEE I HATE APPLE :mad: WHERE'S MY FATHER HE WILL KILL YOU ALL (scream)"

-or-

"Hey guys i've had my Macbook pro for a while and its been giving me a bit of a headache. i've tried to _____ and even after reciving a replacement this machine too is acting up. I truly rely on my machine for my daily work (fudge this if you must) and would just like to have this situation remedied. Perhaps a brand new late 2008 replacement is in order ;)"

+ if you really want to confuse em' come armed with knowledge. Print out the KB article and any types of reports of replacements dying also. FCC complaints, apple forum information, everything.

Acting stupid just won't get you anywhere.

I'm not acting stupid, I'm just expressing my experience with Apple so far. Do I sound like I was saying, "ZOMG MY MAC ISNT WORKING OMG I HATE U APPLE!!!!!"? Many people seem to have a good experience with Apple and I'm not one of them as you read. Also, I have NOT ONCE gone into an Apple store and argued with anyone, I was polite and willing to listen, same for the phone. So please don't jump to conclusions as you may have not had any difficulty with Apple. :)

Does anyone know of any such replacements dying? cause if that's so i'll just ask for the new one ^^ Worth a shot right?
