So... what's new in iOS14?

I just installed 14.0.1 on my iPhone 7 Plus. The most obvious new thing are the widgets and app library. But since I'm primarily an Android user, these don't feel new to me. It's one of those things that "Oh, iPhone can do that now as well, cool..." and that's it. I merely add a weather widget on my home screen (just like I have weather widget on my Android) and that's about it. And since I always just search the app I want to use, I hardly even look at the app library.

And... is that it? I actually have to rewatch the WWDC keynote just to refresh my mind on what's new on iOS14.
Messages? We use Whatspp. Maps? Not that useful in Indonesia. CarPlay? Don't have a car that supports it. Picture in picture? Well that's neat, but not new for me as well since I have had it on my Android. App clip? Maybe that's going to be useful once the devs utilize it for demos of their apps.

Not bashing in on iOS14, but since most of the tent pole features are not that relevant for me, are there anything else? I know sometimes Apple would spotlight a feature but there are other more interesting things happening. Any new things you guys experience on iOS 14 that are not one of the tent-pole features advertised by Craig?

App Clips

AirPods

Privacy
  • A recording indicator is displayed whenever an app has access to the microphone or camera

  • Important details about each app are displayed in a glanceable, scrollable view, including a way to see the games your friends are playing
Apple Arcade
  • Coming Soon gives you a sneak peek at upcoming Apple Arcade games and you can automatically download them as soon as they’re released
  • See All Games is improved with sorting and filtering by release date, updates, category, controller support and more
  • Achievements are browsable right from within the Apple Arcade tab
  • Continue Playing makes it easy to resume recently played games across devices
  • Game Center dashboard showcases your profile, friends, achievements, leaderboards and more, all from within your game
Apple Cash Family
  • Apple Cash can be enabled for up to five family members under 18
  • Send money to your child through Messages or by asking Siri
  • Notifications for purchases or person to person payments as they occur
  • Parental controls to limit who your children can send money to
  • Option to turn off Apple Cash for family members under 18
  • Shared oversight with another adult in your Family Sharing group
Augmented Reality
  • Location Anchors in ARKit 4 enables apps to place AR experiences at a specific geographic coordinate
  • Extended face tracking support is extended to the new iPhone SE
  • Video textures in RealityKit enable apps to apply video to any part of a scene or virtual object
Camera
  • Improved shot-to-shot performance speeds up the time to first shot and makes shooting photos even faster
  • QuickTake video can now also be captured on iPhone XS and iPhone XR when in Photo mode
  • Quick toggles in Video mode to change video resolution and frame rate from the Camera app
  • Updated Night mode capture experience on iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro provides guidance to help you stay steady throughout the capture, as well as an option to cancel the shot mid-capture

Health
  • Wind Down helps you create a pre-bedtime routine with apps and shortcuts, like listening to a relaxing playlist
  • Custom sleep schedules help you meet your sleep goals with bedtime reminders and wakeup alarms
  • Sleep mode minimizes distractions during Wind Down and Bedtime by turning on Do Not Disturb and simplifying your Lock screen
  • Health Checklist helps you track and manage health and safety features in one place
  • New Mobility category in the Health app, including metrics like walking speed, double support time, step length, and walking asymmetry
Keyboard and International
  • On-device dictation helps protect your privacy by performing all processing completely offline. Dictation in search uses server-based dictation in order to recognize terms you may be searching for from across the Internet.

I don’t think most iOS users think they are new. Most descriptions of 14 widgets are describes as all new design and able to be placed on home screens.

The Activity app is broken for some users and the Screen Time widget works, but there is no data in Screen Time for some users. iOS 14 has disabled the ability to sync with iTunes for me. This is, apparently, my fault for not buying a new laptop which I can’t afford and didn’t need until iOS 14 switched off syncing with iTunes for me. Very annoyed. Don’t know what to do. My laptop is still great. Fast enough for me still has a great battery life no problems with it at all. Thanks to iOS 14 iTunes is no longer of any use and I cannot add more music to my phone or back it up to my Mac if I wanted to. iOS14 has effectively ruined my phone for me

If anyone can help I’d really appreciate it. I just want to be able to sync and update my phone with iTunes like I always could until iOS14

I didn’t dive in until 13.3 so I dodged a lot of that. But agreed from what I’ve heard and read

and only been on 13.3 and 13.5 out of all builds. I’ve heard it’s been an oscillating crapshoot from one to the next even minor updates

heck that seems to be the case14.0 to 14.0.1 even

Yes, but in iOS 14 developers can use WidgetKit to make new widgets with a new design that are available in three different sizes and that can be placed on the Home Screen. They’re so different from the old ones t most people think that widgets themselves are new.
 
So. It looks like I am completely screwed. iOS 14 is not compatible with my Macbook Pro. Looks like I have no option but to switch to Android

I just want to put my music onto my iPhone. Apple says that’s not allowed anymore because I can’t afford a new laptop
