I need some buying advice: I leaning towards Silver iPhone X, but I like the SG one too. I don't care about scratches much (and no, I don't plan on using a case most of the time), but since both models look great to me, I guess I would take the SG one if I knew it scratched less.

Most videos on YT say that you can see the scratches more easily on Silver, however - some claim that since the SG has a pigmented steel frame, that when you do scratch it, it will show the silver underneath (and I still remember my black iPhone 5).

So, does anyone know which one is more susceptible to wear & tear?

Look, I don't care about a scratch here and there that much, but I do to feel that premium look in my hands. There were some Apple products, like the original iPhone, that gained character when they got scratched. Maybe this is the case with the Silver one?

Aside from the scratches, my problem is that on some photos, the Silver one looks better, but on others - it looks like it's made of some cheap aluminium foil to me. I can't see it in store myself, because my country won't get the X until the end of the month, so I'll be preordering without having a look in the store.

The Silver one looks more fun this year, but I may end up playing safe and getting the SG one. So, any thoughts? As I said, if the Silver one is more prone to scratching, that may help me decide.

They scratch equally easily because they are made of the same materials. But any scratches on the silver will probably be more noticeable.

As for looks, I think the silver version has an interesting classic feel to it, while the black feels more modern, and in my opinion, more premium.

Agreed with the above. They will scratch just as easy but one may show worse than the other. I chose SG cause after a few years of a light grey back I wanted the darkest iPhone possible. But it was a tough choice.

SG is the envy of all who see it and is unmatched in quality and looks. Silver heads have to convince themselves that their phone is reminiscent of the classic iPhone but those opinions are inaccurate I tell you. SG blends into the night and provides a feeling of badassery you will not be able to get with the vanilla alternative.

Be the man your peers will envy, with the color that says “I can take your life with one hand if need be”. Buy the SGX.

What put me off the Silver was the white face. I don't think it fits well with such large bezels. The SG variant is all black and just looks 'stealthy'?

BTW that silver to my eyes is more of a white?
As they are all glass they will all scratch the same. I would have thought the silver-white would have shown scratches less than the SG though? Time will tell. That is not much use to the OP though.

Silver here.
You want people to know you have a X. You go silver. If you want to stay under the raider. While owning a piece of luxury. Then go sg. When I pull this Silver Butter Beast out my pocket. It becomes the center of attention.

The surgical device steel used on silver stainless is almost identical to the 316 L stainless used on the regular stainless Apple Watch. It does scratch relatively easily, however a Cape Cod cloth is a must have, which easily removes any minor scratches.

Got both, a second X I just bought today (space grey). if you can hold out, I will report back.

Are you going to put either in a case? Is so, why worry?

Silver, bro.

I was all about space gray for only five days. I was for silver from Sept 12 - Nov 2. Then I saw both and started liking sg more. Then I checked both out a few more times and started to like silver more again.

It comes down to two choices -

Banding or rear? I prefer the silver banding but prefer the sg rear.

The stainless steel silver banding won out because I don't look at the rear of my phones all day. But I do see the front and also view it from an angle which is where the silver shines.

So silver won out again for me. Harks back to the old school iPhones from the previous decade. If it's laying on a table, you can recognize the silver banding right away. The sg X looks too much like jb 7 and sg 8. Been there, done that.

Silver. Looks more premium especially looking at it from a distance and an angle.

Lol so many threads on this.

They both scratch and need to be used in a case if you care about scratches and keeping your phone looking pristine!

Which is easier to scratch?

It's a toss up man, depends where you keep it, what's in the pocket, and seriously how carful you really are.

I switched from the silver to the Space Gray after a week, I just wanted to go back to what I really liked. All black!

Now with that said, silver is hot, it's just a really classy looking phone! However depending on what case you use things can get tricky. I use the Apple cases, and that leaves the bottom open to the rest of the word. That silver will get scratched no matter what you do, it's polished stainless steel, and that type of SS can scratch with you just wiping your finger across it (it's soft)

With the SG it's again, a toss up with how you handle your phone. I will be just as careful as I was with the silver, however for me it's a look thing...I just happen to think with the cases I use the black bottom just looks really uniform and stealthy at the same time.

I have been switching back and fourth between a Black leather Apple case and a product red or midnight blue silicone case and they all look so good on this phone in Space Gray!

But that's me...get what you like, either will scratch if your not carful.

Which do you prefer more? Banding or rear color? That's the only TWO aspects that differentiates them from one another. Banding or rear, banding or rear?

I prefer silver banding but the sg rear. But I asked myself, how often do I see that rear? Rarely. I will see the front and it will lay down at an angle on the side of my bed (top of a pillow) or table.

Anytime I watch color comparison videos, I rarely see the silver in an angle. They show just their rears. I don't care about that. I want front silver X at an angle. Because at an angle with black and silver sides, it looks PREMIUM. A space gray X looks like any other Android phone.

The iPhone that the X is trying to honor to...

The silver is more attention-grabbing, and the Gray has a more subtle professional vibe.

Seriously though, I can’t imagine not using a case. Although I guess there are plenty of clear case options out there.

Although I don't disagree to not use a case, cases can also be the culprit for causing scratches on the stainless bands. I would regularly take the phones out of the case and clean the crevices from any debris. It's easy to forget about, but it will help prevent from further scratching caused by debris wedged inside the case.

I originally had the silver, and I thought it was OK. It started to show micro scratches on the bottom (I take extremely good care of my devices - and use Apple's silicone case) they were too noticeable and bugging me.
I don't like the idea of having to polish a device either..
I then moved to the Space Gray and believe it is a much nicer, sleeker looking device. It looks complete as there are no colour changes.
It hasn't shown micro scratches anywhere near like the silver did.
Sure the silver is still nice, but I couldn't be happier since moving to the SG.

I have had space gray since launch. I’m the type that will take an flashlight along my phone to look for micro abrasions. My space gray has 0. Yesterday I was at Best Buy and an employee there had Silver with a case. He wanted to see mine since I was caseless at the time. Mine is still pristine while his silver with a case on it had scratches along the stainless steel.

Of course this is one instance. I also use stainless steel wipes on the stainless steel of my X. I do t do it nightly or anything, but I have done it twice since owning the X. I haven’t used a case but 2 days out of the 9 that I’ve had it.

No scratch, but I did get a spigen airskin to use while at work, but while home I will be caseless. I dont expect my phone to stay this way for the duration, but I’m pleased thus far... and there’s always AppleCare+ as well

The Silver one feels heavier and slower.

Everyone knows that Apple favors the darker colored products, always has.

The first iPod was white and slow, replaced by the iPod Touch which was grey and fast. The white MacBook? Replaced by the grey MacBook. The white iPod Shuffle? Replaced by the grey iPod Shuffle. White iMac? That's grey now too.

They make the lighter colored products heavier. They make the lighter colored products in lesser factories. I'm surprised you don't know this.

Hold up. You're saying that the iPod Touch was faster than the first iPod. No ****. The old white Macbook replaced by the NEW gray Macbook with better specs? Of course it would be faster. Same thing with the iMacs. So Apple has done away with some of their white products, so?

"They make lighter colored products in lesser factories"
So?
You're claiming that the same device is heavier and slower than the alternate color version here. Please provide proof the silver iPhone X is heavier and slower than the black iPhone X.
