So yesterday, power was flickering in my apt. Was it a sign?

So anyhow, yesterday the NYC area had a huge storm and the power was flickering on and off. And then I thought to myself, man what would happen if my building lost power. I'd still want to be on the Internet but my cable modem/router would be out. I was like, this is one case where I'd be like, damn I wish I bought that 3G iPad instead of a Wifi one. Was it a sign that I made the right decision for going for the 3G iPad? ;-)

As you can see, I'm going mentally insane while waiting for the day I can "reserve" mine for in-store pickup, and the extra 30 days it's going to take to get it :)

    My 3g version is all pre-ordered :D

I have a battery backup that my router and modem run on, along with the mini. I use an eyeTV on it and need to still be able to check the weather radar in a storm. I normally shut the mini down and resort to the Touch, but it works well.

It was $99 at Costco :D

Yeah I have a UPS on my router and modem too. But the juice in it would only last so long :).

Yeah, I didn't pre-order because I want to pick up in store ;-).

UPS = best idea, but won't help if a storm also knocks out power at your service provider. You'll need WiFi working to enable 3G if you don't keep it active all the time. So activate it BEFORE the storms to be safe.

That is one of the things I love about the iPhone. The power went out in my neighbourhood three times last summer for some reason and my web surfing continued without issue. I will be getting a 3G iPad without doubt.

Well, it already sucks that you are losing power when there's a storm. But why do you think it's a sign. It's not like the storm is saying: just pay an extra $130 so you can internet during a storm.

You also realize you might have a very bad reception during a storm? And personally Personally, I think you shouldn't buy the iPad if you only want to use the internet on it. There are tons of applications (which do not require an internet connection) which you can use on the iPad.

Unless you are only using the $14.99 plan as you need it, off and on. If you are not subscribed, you enable it via your WiFi connection to AT&T, or over the network from your PC/Mac if you're lucky. This thread is about the power going out though, which is unlucky. The worst possible thing will happen at the worst possible moment. That means prepare for the worst if you're desperate without a data connection on your iPad. Enable 3G when the major storm is on it's way, not after the power goes out.

I remember "back in the day" the only dilemma we had during a power outage was which board game are we going to play. :D

Nah, I'm a developer, and will write programs for the iPad. As well as use all the wondrous apps that will be available. As a bonus, I'll have 3G iPad for times like this :).
