I've been stuck in a group chat of 8 people for far too long, my battery is running wearier and my data is being abused.

I can't block members of the group due to its my friends and i just wanted a discrete way of disappearing out of it

I feel your pain. Usually when I get group texts, it becomes just a conversation between 2 people and you get the constant alerts even though you have no part in it. I wish there was a way. Only thing I can think is to ask them to start a new group text without you in it. But, then again, that may come off as a bit "bitchy".

EXACTLY my pains, They're my friends and all but I really don't need to wake up to 1000+ unread text (not a joke)

I keep anticipating that group thread settings will be released with an iOS update for these very reasons. The group texting has gotten absurd.

No easy way without asking them to start a new group without you.

I generally just blame work. "Hey guys I need to keep the volume on but can't be getting all these text at work. Can you temporarily start a new group without me". Then hope they forget to re add you.

all I read on the web was no way. but checking iMessage settings you can turn off group chat. Seems to work for me. Or block the person that started maybe

It's been a very long time but last time I had group message off it just didn't "group" the messages.

If you block someone in a group it just blocks them. You'd need to block everyone. Generally not an option.

When turning off iMessage I'll just SMS group.

Like I mentioned it's been a while since I've tried so it may have changed but I've found no good way to leave a group message without just asking.

If you're jailbroken, I highly recommend BiteSMS, as it does allow you to suppress texts from any one as well as group texts. If you're stock..I suppose you can just block the people for a few hours or days.

I believe you'll get separate messages from those people since your number is still part of that group text.

As per the Group Message document - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5760

■It is not possible to remove yourself from a group message.

Could you just ask the folks in the group to all remove you from their list? Seems the best option. It would be the same as a standard SMS group. iMessage essentially is a replacement for SMS/MMS after all, with some slight improvements (speaking UI here not how messages are actually transferred).

This is the only way I'm aware of.

You bring up a good point, SMS are the same way. iMessage is a good example of something being too convenient. :)

I disabled them a long time ago after an.. err.. awkward situation. Let's just say while scrolling through my texts, all I saw was the name. I didn't realize it was a group conversation, especially because they don't really look any different than a conversation with one person. It's amazing that there is no way to opt out of a conversation.

I just give people my imessage email if they want to group chat and it all goes straight to my iPod so it can be ignored when needed.

Quite often I think the others are not aware or are not thinking about the "group" being in the conversation.

Probably a good reason you can not turn it off. If the user WANTS you in a group and wants you to get a message for good reason, how would they know if you were, or were not getting the messages?

I had this happen recently and just replied... Group Message.

At the very least you should be able to mute notifications for a group message. But you should be able to leave it too. If someone wants you to know something they can message you individually.

I had this problem in a group message with 4 of my friends. Ended up setting all their individual message notification tone to "none". That way my phone never went off when they messaged in it.

Submit feedback to Apple. It looks like a lot of people in this thread have the same issue so band together and try to force a change #.
