Freedom of speech? What's that? Obviously it's more important not to hurt people's feelings!

Brings back memories of bad Stalone movies.

"you are fined one credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute."

"Your repeated violation of the Verbal Morality Statute has caused me to notify the San Angeles Police Department. Please remain where you are for your reprimand."

there's no way that law could ever pass. it would be repealed by the supreme court.

This seems a most splendid idea, my poor linguistically challenged cousins.

If this law passes someone will have to challenge it for it to be considered by the Supreme Court of the United States. It will not make it that far as the first judge to rule on the challenge will declare the law unconstitutional.

I'll go to SC and just start yelling in the town square. I'd love to be the one to challenge this.

Maybe then they will look into intent as well until people can't say anything at all.

I mean, I have always wondered why sh*t is deemed a curse word, yet it is common place to hear someone say 'crap'. The intent is the same, yet why is one considered bad compared to the other?

Either way this is a dumb idea and will fail miserably.

The disappointing part about this proposal is that it doesn't appear to clearly describe what 'profanity' is, which invariably makes it Unconstitutionally Vague .

Of course, if they were to explicitly list what the banned profanity words are, then the law would be in violation with itself, since to "...publish ...in writing..." is explicitly prohibited. As such, the State of SC is prohibiting itself from even telling you what words they're banning!

And this is just the tip of the slippery slope (warning: potential exists that the below examples may offend the extremely small of cerebral intellectual capacity):

"You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? (Matthew 23:32-34) --- would these words be banned? The question is what role does context play? Afterall, if the word "Hell" is on their blacklist regardless of context, this means that this proposed law would ban the Bible from SC.

"Gosh Golly, Gee Wiz Darn It!" --- is this to be banned? Afterall, what is profanity to one person might not be to all, or even most.

"Bloody Hell!" --- banned? Is the profanity requirement for just "American" English, or all English (including the Queen's English)?

"Dunnavetter!" --- banned? Or don't you know what it means, because you don't speak that language? Would their requirement include all languages, no matter how obscure? ohway arnday!

Let's not forget the ever-popular "frak". Sorry, no BSG in SC.

This is about as dumb as the time my beloved Santa Cruz city council debated outlawing "hate".

I was ready to chain myself to the clock tower shouting "I HATE homophobes, I HATE starvation, I HATE child molesters" etc.

Anyone who supports their proposition is nuts.
I'd go to SC just to be profane.

So, SC really no worse than the MR forums? ;)

Frelling, Fracking, Smegging idiots. If you ban profanity we just find new words to replace those that were removed.

They'd have to outlaw a good proportion of concerts, high schools, colleges, PG-13 and higher rated movies, a good bit of recordings, and a lot of people would get arrested. It'd be ridiculous to enforce, too.
