    First - the logos (my eyes!) - Apparently keeping in line with our other military branches and their design language is too much.

    Second - If you don't think Trump is remotely a war monger - then read the bullets below and then rethink that. None of the language is designed around keeping peace or exploration. No - the purpose of the Trump's space for is fighting.

    Third - the whole idea just panders to Trump's ego.

    Pence announced that the Defense Department will be releasing a report outlining the first stages to "implement the president's guidance and turn his vision into a reality." He talked about four actions the Defense Department would take on this front, including these new elements:

    • Space Command: A new unified combat and command structure for space led by a four-star flag officer to "establish unified command and control for space force operations, integration across the military and develop space war fighting doctrine";
    • Space Operations Force: An elite group of joint war fighters specializing in the domain of space to "form the backbone" of the new service;

    • Space Development Agency: A new joint organization to help the Space Force tasked with developing new capabilities and "break[ing] free" from bureaucratic structures; and

    • A new assistant secretary of defense for space: A position that will help transition eventually to a "fully independent Secretary of the Space Force in the years ahead" who will report to Secretary of Defense Mattis.

    The patches aren't a serious effort. They're just a PR stunt.

    Just look at them. The first is just a repurposed NASA "meatball." The second looks stolen from a Lego Space kit. The third is, I'm certain from the 80's-era StarCom toys, the fourth is for toddlers, the fifth is also from StarCom (or stolen from the Colonial Marines of Aliens) and the last one seems to indicate that "Space Force" is going to explore Mars, which I thought was NASA's job and not a military expedition.

    If you wanted an indication that Space Force is a dedicated wank and defense industry boondoggle to keep the emperor toddler happy, the patches are it.

    And, here's the thing: I love space exploration. I watched Columbia touch down at Edwards Air Force base standing on top of an RV and I watched Endeavour thunder into the muggy air near Kennedy Space Center on its last mission.

    But, Space Force is ********.

    Just what we need, yet another branch of the military to bleed us dry and increase either the debt or taxes. The current Air Force is more than capable of doing whatever the idiot in chief envisions his Space Force doing. The infrastructure already exists. The Military/Industrial Complex needs to be destroyed, not given more money and a new venue. Even Mark Kelly, a former NASA astronaut is calling him out.

    The fastest rockets and most advanced technology could not begin to reach the galaxy that Trump's mind inhibits.

    Dumb idea, but then what else would you expect from this administration?

    Also, the logos are hideous.

    Purchasing the latest two aircraft carriers costs 37 billion, how much is that space carrier going to cost?

    Just think about how much the Space Shuttle program cost, now magnify that by a thousand... or more. The problem if the Republicans had a Golden Goose, or a Money tree, whey would not be sharing it with any of the peons, but there would be a guilded palace floating around up in space, maybe with a T on it.

    The same 10 million conventional medium range ballistic missile that could sink an aircraft carrier can take down a satellite.

    Maybe let’s works on first defending our cyber-space than space-space.

    Do we really need to create an arms race with Russia and the rest of the world in space?

    Space Force is Trump university all over again.

    But the Space Force is the purest expression of the branding maneuver, given the mismatch between the hype (“Mars Awaits”) and the reality (“It is imperative that the United States adapts its policies, doctrine, and capabilities to protect our interests,” as the new report put it). Anyone tempted to get excited about the Space Force would be well advised to keep the Trump University precedent in mind. The seminars were a short-term success: Thousands of people signed up, creating a new revenue stream for Trump. But they eventually wised up that they weren’t buying real-estate secrets so much as a bill of goods, and some of them sued him, resulting in a $25 million settlement. Eventually, misleading branding schemes have a tendency to fall back down to Earth.

    He literally said something stupid at a campaign rally, heard people chant the words back, and decided to turn it into real policy.
