The use of gun seems overkill, but what is up with the 11 year old out in a dangerous neighborhood, at 1am in the morning, on a school night.

His church organized pro-abstinence study group ran a little late.

It's sad that is unsurprising to see an unsupervised 11 year old child out at the middle of the night on school night.

This is where the kid lives. He ran out to the car to retrieve a charger. Are you seriously implicating the victim or his parents?

I guarantee your kids have done the same thing. Or will.

Why does he need a charger at 1am on a school night?

Where does it say it was a dangerous neighborhood? People can commit the occasional crime even in good neighborhoods.

And he was getting a charger for his phone, getting up in the middle of the night to get something that you just remembered you forgot isn't that uncommon. I can understand having a debate about if an 11 year old kid really needs the cellphone that he was getting the charger for, but that is for a different thread.

    Irrelevant. He just does.

Why do I need a charger at 1am?
    Phones dead
    iPads dead
    Camera's dead
Busy day tomorrow and my external battery needs to be topped off
Thought my stuff was charging but seems the cord is bad. Need another
Wife and I need to use the same charger at the same time

    The list is endless.

Why is this story even thread worthy? Nobody got hurt, it sounds like a common robbery.

Are you trying to blame the victim?

11 or 90 it shouldn't make any difference.

Please note it's probably a dangerous area, because the police are to busy shooting unarmed people in other areas. If police went back to old fashion patrolling maybe it won't be so dangerous?

At 1am on a school night? Probably should be in bed to get some rest for school tomorrow

The real question is why does it suddenly matter 3 months after it happened.

You're only allowed to look down your nose over something as small as this, with such harsh consequences, if you yourself are perfect in every conceivable way. A paragon of absolute virtue who's never even slightly strayed from the straight and narrow once in their entire life.

As far as you know, he could've been doing homework all that time, and ran to the car to get his phone charger before turning into bed at night. Either way, for whatever reason, you have absolutely no compelling reason to run through the usual victim blaming spiel here.

Yeah, as a parent I wouldn't let my child stay up all night till 1am to finish 5th grade homework.

There should be a law against 11-year olds retrieving phone chargers from a family car at 1:00 a.m. on a school night.

I agree, kids should not provoke a robbery on themselves, police should taser kids after 10pm.
