My m1 5th gen air is not old by the standards here but I plan to keep it as long as I can. Recently I had about 43gb of my base 64gb allotted to system files and OS. I decided to back up and delete or reset the iPad and now that has about 20gb between the two.

I was thinking that my iPad was being forced into obsolescence due to the storage constraints.

So now I have a decent amount of free space and with m1 and 8gb ram should keep going for another several years.

One of the great things about Apple hardware is generally how well it is made and how long it lasts. So with care maybe I can get 10 years of decent use out of it.

Using our hardware as long as feasible is always better both for the environment and your return on investment.
I am typing this on my iPad Air 5 on iPadOS 15 and I also want to keep it for as long as possible. And I also have the 64GB version but since I don’t update my storage is pretty static.

I think it would last a significant amount of time, this of course depends on your requirements.

In spite of the backlash I got, I maintain my opinion that once you have to start inventing tasks because it can barely do anything, then the device is barely useful. Hopefully iPadOS 15 remains usable for a long time, but I’m under no illusions here. I don’t know how many more years I have left. Right now it is perfect and fully compatible, but we’ll see.

Performance is too good for it to start losing its ability to do anything.

I have a first-gen iPad mini (iOS 9).

Originally, I bought a cheap plastic clip-on rear case. No idea why, but it's proved useful now!

I placed it against a wall and hammered a nail through it, and have clipped my mini back in it. I use it mainly to show a flip-clock app. Sometimes, I show my photos on it, or run my old Logitech Harmony or Denon AVR apps and use it as a remote.

As it's iOS 9, it's not possible to find new apps for it (even apps which might have existed in iOS 9 versions originally) so I'm kind of stuck with apps I originally had on the thing.

I don't use it much, but it's either going to be on my wall or in a recycling bin. So, for the time being, the wall it is!
