Still using Big Sur, should I upgrade to Monterey?

Hello, friends.

I'm one of those odd people that sticks to older operating systems. I was on Snow Leopard for years before moving to Mountain Lion, and then I used to for ages before upgrading to Sierra. I'm quite happily using Big Sur on my MBP at the moment but wondering if I should upgrade to Monterey before the new one releases in a few months.

Does Monterey do away with anything available in Big Sur or older that I might miss out on? At the very least, Monterey seems to have been available for long enough that there shouldn't be any major bugs (hopefully).

I upgraded and all of my external Western Digital and Maxtor drives stopped working properly

So I downgraded back to Big Sur and they now work fine again. My Samsung SSD was not affected.

Lots of people have upgraded without any problems. You can always roll back if you want (though it can be time consuming to do this and you'll have to reinstall lots of things again - it's not as easy as upgrading).

I personally do not upgrade the OS unless I have a reason to, such as SW no longer supported on the older OS, or if there is a feature on the new OS that I want/need.

MacOS is good because you can go back to an older OS or have multiple boot drives.

But still, I don’t like the surprises of new bugs or removed features.

Thanks both. Any good online sources on how to roll back if I need to? I use an external HDD which I use for Time Machine backups. Hoping it’s as simple as re-installing the last backup but I’m unsure if that would go back to the previous OS.

Sorry I did’t answer the question, i am still using Catalina (after few months trying Big Sur and found it very slow in my old 2020 MBA).

Recently upgraded my 2015 MacBook Pro from Catalina directly to Monterey. I too was somewhat skeptical but everything is running smooth and snappy. I feel both happy and relieved. I can highly recommend. HTH
