iPod Storing Files on an iPod

I read somewhere that its possible for your iPod to act like a portable hard drive and that someone was able to transfer .zip files to it. How do I go about doing this?

Plug it in, goto iTunes preferences -> iPod, enable disk use, use it as any other external HD.
