strange Address printing

In the last week when I print lists or mailing labels from Address Book, I get some strange additions: e.g., an exclamation (!) mark between City!state!
ZIP
Needless to say I've check the entry in Address Book, and the (!) is not there.
Why is it being added. Gremlins, or worse?
And, how to I get back to normal?
